Generally does everyone replace the entire piece, or just cut out the bad metal. I have mint OEM floor steel in some of it and I'm hesitant to cut it out.

Each situation is different I guess. My personal opinion is if I just need a small patch and I can butt weld it and polish the welds on both sides and make it invisible I'll do that. I am not a guy that is going to buy two halfs and overlap weld them both in. Some people can do that and be happy with it but it's not what I want. If it needs 2 halfs then I'm going to put a 1 piece pan in.
I like nice finished results but there is also the work factor. I don't enjoy welding 8 feet on each side and then grinding 16 feet on both sides. Of course removing a whole pan takes a lot of work as well.

If you decide to repair only one side, be aware that there are some differences in the stiffening rib stamping designs offered by some suppliers.  Best to confirm what you have before ordering a replacement pan.  For example, AMD floor pans don't use the correct stamping for 1970 model cars. Also, some of the cheaper pans don't have the factory holes.   :alan2cents:
