Heavy surface rust removal

ooking for suggestions on how to effectively remove/neutralize surface rust. I have a `73 road runner (I know not an E-body) that was stripped and left sitting outside and need an at home way to clean the metal. I have a couple places that sand/media blast but I`m a do-it-yourself kind of guy. If it's just surface rust you can use Captian Lees rust remover. Rub it in with a red scotch bright pad and it will clean right up. That's what works for me. If it's heavy pitted rust blasting might be your best bet. Be careful not to overheat and warp the metal.

If it's a full body then it's going to take a lot of time, but muriatic acid works good.  I prefer to media blast cars and then put them right in to epoxy.

My brother who was a professional mechanic for 40 years swears by oxalic acid. 
It is inexpensive and worked well.

I also picked up Eastwood's new Contour Surface Conditioning Tool.  It is available with a variety of grits/rollers and is designed to remove surface rust and or condition the surface metal for epoxy.
These made some quick work of cleaning rust and paint on some of my larger body surfaces.
The speed is adjustable so you don't warp the metal.

A couple people suggested those Eastwood wheels but they do not get down into the small pits so you still need to treat the metal with something or those pits will come back thru the paint later.

When I was at the PPG training lab they showed me a gel product that I think would work good for you.  Let me look at my notes and get you the info.  Stand by...

@torredcuda   This is a safe water based rust removal gel.  It's in the commercial line so some of the normal PPG dealers might not be able to get it.  It's called GFX744 CorroKlean 44.  Super easy to use.  Brush it on and leave it.  Leave it on a day or two is fine.  Then wipe it off.  Once the rust is removed I highly suggest putting a metal prep on it and then putting it in Epoxy.

Sounds like what I`m looking, I`ll talk to my paint supply guy next time I go in. There are plenty of rust converters and treatments out there but most leave some type of  coating ont he surface and I would prefer to just leave clean metal so I can how I want.

Let me know how it works.  The small 12"x 12" area we did in the lab was on an old hood and it look like it did great, but I want to get real feedback from people who have tried it.  I like that it's easy to clean up and citrus based.
