Missing cover or plug?

Not that it really matters, but it looks like your car came equipped with the pipe, in the trunk, setup. It looks like the tab to help secure it, is spot welded to the rt. rear wheel arch, in the trunk. Glad you received that plate. It's crude, but it'll work.

I think it is considered a mid-year car (early April '72) and although the wheel house does indeed have the curved tab welded to it to support a pipe, everything else on it suggests no pipe was in the trunk as it had a tank with 4 vent tubes with hoses venting to a chamber on the shock cross-member and a single 1/4" vent line running up to a charcoal canister on the inner fender.  I think the car was built with leftovers from earlier production.  :dunno:
