A student of mine has a dad whos a big car guy and swears that PPG primer is garbage. He said PPG paint is fine but their primer is garbage.

He said I should use dt90 which is around $500 or dt50 which is around $250, he wasn't sure the size of the unit for those prices.

Any opinions?

Cuda Cody recommended DP74LF, who makes that?

Can't find anything about DT90 online, maybe he meant DP90, dude swears a lot, maybe I misheard him.  Ever heard of DT90 or DP90?  It's supposed to seal well.

Thanks

Neil

Never heard of DT90.   :notsure:  But DP90 is the PPG Epoxy primer just in Black instead of Red.  And it's around $500 a gallon.

DP40 = Gray / Greenish
DP48 - White
DP50 = Gray
DP60 = Blue
DP74 = Red
DP90 = Black

He probably meant DP 90 made by PPG.
Years ago all paint companies had to reformulate there paint lines to meet EPA standards.
The epoxy line changed. DP primers had great adhesion before the change. After the change if you used a acid primer ( DX 1791) before the epoxy it worked as well as before.

Today I would use DPLF line of epoxy for bare metal. These are non sanding base primers. We do our body filler work over this and it works well.

After filler work is done I use VP 2050 sand able surfacer. After all the blocking is done I use ECP 17.

We wet sand the ECP 17 and then it is time for sealer and base.

All the products I mentioned are PPG.

Follow the P sheet instructions and you should be fine as long as the painting environment is good.

Not to get far off track on this but for the underside of cars with heavy pitting or lots of grinder hash.
Try CRE 2 XXX This product will fill anything! Very easy to sand.
I used it on several cars and as a example I used it to fill the casting and body filler on these.
