Friend of mine a few years ago purchased a 1970 426 hemi Challenger with 4 speed. The car was originally a 340 but engine was swapped out sometime before he bought it which he knew. A few days ago he pulled the tranny and bell housing in order to install a new clutch etc. He then saw that the engine was stamped that it was cast in 1964 and the bell housing was 1965. There is no numbers anywhere that tell what it had been built for. He's in the process of talking with Brewers in order to get the proper parts.

With it being that old of engine with no vin, could it have been built for racing prior to car production ?

Most likely: No Street Hemis until 1966.

the 426 HEMI made its "public" debut at Daytona during late February 1964 (they were significantly RARE at that point, what's the casting date?)
by the end of the summer, Chrysler built ~180 production cars & numerous engines for anything that could be raced - NASCAR * USAC * IHRA * NHRA * boats * Bonneville * etc.

a 1,2,3 finish at NASCAR's 1964 Daytona 500 gave notice  :burnout:
