Whoa Sheldon...what's going on with the DS 1/4 ? That looks like another story....

Ya I was wondering about that too...    :pullinghair:

@RUNCHARGER Do you have the factory spec or drawing for the foam that went around the rear window insert? Was the white one first put on without the foam? I agree that the white one in the photos doesn't look very good. Any other SE owners have words of wisdom about installing a new vinyl roof?

Cuda Cody

:iagree:  What's the deal on that damage?  Looks like a nicely painted car, but that quarter?

RUNCHARGER

Yes: They applied the first vinyl without the foam and gave up. I don't have a drawing of the foam but the extra SE plug I had did have remnants of the foam, vinyl etc.
That shot of the 1/4 was from when they carelessly loaded it in Az. before it was painted. No rust but no care taken either.

Hmmm, so the SE had foam under the top. What was the purpose of that to make it softer, or to cover up the back wind seam.  Since I am doing everything else on my car, I thought about giving it a try. But reading @RUNCHARGER  post, I may leave it to someone that know, if I can find one.

The plug is indented a bit, it's designed to be filled by the foam rubber to bring it up to the roof's sheetmetal level. I think it was a big deal back in the day to have a limo's vinyl roof padded, so that's what they were going for with the SE.

My car was painted when I bought it(fresh) they used bondo to fill in around the glass insert. It smooth

You're good to go then. It will look better than original, original cars you could pick out the edge of the plug.

So, does anyone know what kind of foam to use? Does anyone else agree with using bondo? Not sure I'm too crazy about using bondo.  :notsure:

71GranCoupe

The factory used bondo on the quarter seems of most cars with vinyl tops. It may crack, but will not be visible unless the fabric is removed. So, should be alright on the window joint to the body.  :alan2cents:

RUNCHARGER

I could be wrong on this but I forgot to add that the factory also used seam sealer over the screws that attached the plug to the body as well. My car was jiggered with before I got it. Perhaps someone has opened up an original SE and could add more facts? You can probably get fairly smooth results by doing a good smooth job with the seam sealer and experimenting to get the proper thickness and density of foam but I don't think you're going to hit it the first time unless you're really lucky I know I sure didn't.

On one of my cars sitting outback has a silver tape over some of the screws. Will try and get some pictures, but the snow has been relentless here.

RUNCHARGER

Ah, forgot about that! Gran Coupe is correct!
