Is your coil mounted stock or pointed up? I've failed 2 MSD coils the last few years by mounting them stock.

12 volt flame thrower mounted stock position.
I don't know if it's an epoxy or oil type.

RUNCHARGER

Hmm: It might be worth trying another coil if you have one.

 :iagree:

Don at FBO said the same thing.

I have a 6 volt coil I can use.

I won't be able to get to find out with it till next Saturday now.

I work till 6pm and then the traffic out here is crazy.
The car is 20-25 miles away.

Next Saturday is crunch time.  :wrenching:

Don said I can buy a 12 V coil at O'Reilly's he has the P/N if I need.

Oh, it's going to be a long week then.

Exactly.

I need it on it's feet by Saturday 6pm.

De Anza Mopar show is Sunday.

Just curious what timing you are running?

Just curious what timing you are running?

22 degrees initial advance with a total at 36 degrees.

Keep in mind it's stroked to 485ci with a higher lift solid cam.

Cuda Cody

Just wondering if the timing slipped or the hold down came undone.  It's odd that you were driving fine and then pow, not running.  Wish I was closer.... I would come give you a hand.

Maybe I should get closer to you.

In my industry they are killing it there.

The distributor is very locked down. I made very sure of it.

When it cranks over, I can hear it turning over efficiently.
So I don't believe it jumped or skipped.

I have had the coil load cause the ECU to fail with FBO more than once while using the FBO supplied coil

RUNCHARGER

That's what happened when my coils went bad. Running well and then they weren't as the coils overheated. When ECU's go on me it seems like they just decide not to start at some point.

I know you've looked & you don't believe it's the problem... I still say pick up a distributor cap.... Your symptoms are a dead on match... A cap is easy & relatively cheap so bring one & prove me wrong.....

Topcat

Don said I need a one that's not with aluminum contacts.

The one I have is bronze contacts inside.

Hey Mike,

Here is a couple more things to try:

1) Hook up a voltage meter to the battery and run it at idle - see what the voltage is and rev it a little and see what you get
2) After test #1 - hook up a timing light and see if your timing is still set where you left it.
3) I can drop the Ignition box off on Thursday morning around 9am or thereabouts at the McD's you mentioned - I will try and get an Orange box but I'm sure what I have will work just fine for testing. (Btw, its brand new)
4) Check the resistance of your ballast resistor (some range from .8 to 1.2) (you might not use one if you are using the 12V one)
5) Check the resistance of your coil and make sure it's to manufacturers spec. It looks like the coil since it's oil based needs to be mounted straight up and down. If you have the epoxy filled one then it shouldn't matter.
Here are the specs: http://www.pertronix.com/docs/instruction-sheets/40001.pdf

Thanks Bryan.   :bigthumb:

I'm going to get right on it Saturday morning.
My voltmeter is broken.

Looking forward to seeing you Thursday.
