I could use some help diagnosing an issue.
I have am almost completely stock 383 Cuda for about 20 years. Unknown total mileage. I have a disconcerting "clunk" sound that I am having trouble diagnosing on my own. Haven't brought it in to a shop which would be a first for me. The single "clunk" comes from the front drivers side undercarriage. It only happens when the car rebounds back after finishing a quick stop. Happens with clutch in or out. Happens very consistently... A clear load "clunk" after car has stopped and rebounds from the stop. No noise if I stop slowly over a long distance. no "clunk" noise at any other time even bumpy roads and any type of turn. I assume either suspension parts or driver side drum brakes. Manual steering box also seems fine.
When I raise the car and shiver the wheels, all feels tight. I changed the sway bar bushing to eliminate that potential. With the car on the ground while I jump up and down on the front bumper, also no clunk. I am hesitant to just randomly change parts and see.
Any advise on where and how to look would be appreciated.

Hard to say for sure but my first gut instinct is your strut rod bushings are worn out. They are a part that is forgotten about over the years too.

Following along, I've got a clunk noise too.
My first guess is the strut rod.

lower control arm bushings maybe?

Have you pulled the brake drum to have a look? A few years ago I heard a bang and the back right wheel locked up. The lining had come off the brake shoe and jammed the wheel. Perhaps you also have a loose lining.

Thanks for the suggestions so far.
Did the lower ball joint test with the raised tire (but supported lower control arm) using the crow bar for motion. Lower ball joint seams OK.
Did the 12:00/6:00 tire wiggle, no noise or unexpected motion in joints.
Did the 9:00/3:00 tire wiggle, no noise or unexpected motion in joints.
Can check the drum brake lining and brake hardware next.

How do I check the lower control arm bushing in the simplest way?

Just realized that my upper control arm bushings don't have the steel sleeve installed. I was under the assumption that this part was not needed. Could this be the issue that creates the clunk after car recoils during fast stops?

Updated.....
Validated upper control arm bushings and tightness, validated properly installed and set torsion bars, validated drum brake and brake hardware setup (changed shoes on passenger since they were cracked). Already checked ball joints and tie rod ends earlier. Struts and bushings look good, however they are not OEM style. They are the style that needs the washer install reversed. I'm not sure if this could be it.
Then a thought I found smoking gun.... bad shocks. Installed brand new shocks.
Took her out for a spin and.... same "clunk" sound when car physically rebounds after a fast complete stop.
I'm stumped, and too lazy to disassemble and validate the lower control arm bushing since its only got about 2000 miles on it.
Its definitely coming from the front undercarriage of the car.
I'm wondering if the engine mounts might be generating this noise.
Any more ideas would really be helpful.

Since we're getting desperate, how bout driveline splined shafts ... e.g. yokes/axles, rear end backlash, u-joints, leaf spring bushings, trans mounts?

Well I found my "clunking noise"
Took a look at the 2 strut rods and noticed the passenger side bushing wasn't "snug" against the k-frame, could see a gap.
I tightened that a little, and the noise appears to be gone.
Now I need to figure out what the spec is for these.

 Struts and bushings look good,
I would at least remove the front of the bushings to check.

Did remove the drivers side front strut bushing. Looked relatively new and perfectly intact. I did purchase new stock style strut bushings and LCA bushings if I decide to just change them without knowing for sure if this would help. I just haven't yet got the courage to start the change out yet and am hoping I can actually pinpoint the issue first.
I am wondering if the UCA bushings slide. If so this there is pressure to slide after a good stop and possible result in a "clunk". I do not have the extra sleeve on the rear bushing from factory which came with my 11" brakes.
Has anyone ever seen the upper control arms bushings slide?
