I have not totally disassembled one for replating but be will interested to see if others have. 

Curious on the aftermarket locking cap you bought.  Was it the discontinued NAPA part or did you find something still available (ie, Stant or other)?  Will be useful to know if something is easier to find.  Thanks

Found on a Facebook post that Stant G92A was a good match, and from your NAPA picture, it looks almost identical. I haven't been able to test it on the filler next yet though.

Well I got the cap apart without any damage. Can now explore replating it.

Left is steal, middle and right must be pot metal.
