:iagree:  To me, this is the most plausible explanation.

Detach tags, clean, paint and then reinstall. If I didn't have a can of factory EV2 spray paint handy (who does??), I too would chose the most common color of spray paint in my garage cabinet ... black.

It isn't worth much, but my  :alan2cents:?? I think the Occam's Razor principle can be applied here ... way too much is being read into the color of the tags.

If preventing further rusting was the goal of painting it the wrong color that was a big fail.

Occam's razor would lead to the most obvious conclusion that it isn't the original tag.
