I purchased a second e-body last week. It is an original 71 Challenger Pace Car. I was looking for a 70 convertible RT.  This one came by so I brought it home. It came with the numbers matching 318 that was replaced by a 440. The auto was removed and a 4 speed installed with a boot. He gave me a console. I got the build sheet and fender tag. The paint is unreal. Runs great. I already registered my Cuda for Carlisle but would like to bring this instead. It is painted as an RT which don't excist. I'm glad because not into the big Indy lettering.

Cool looking ride! How did you verify that it's a pace car? Is it just by the VIN sequence? I'm assuming all of the pace cars were made at the same time.

In 71 none of the car manufacturers were involved on creating an Indy pace car. So 4 Mopar dealers got together and ordered orange Challenger convertibles. All automatics with ac. The engines were 318,340 and 383s. The VINs were not sequential. There are a few sites to look up a VIN to see if the car is an official pace car. When I purchased my Cuda seven years ago there was a clone pace car a person bought in the showroom. He did not look it up before purchasing. He later found out it was a clone and did not want it so he traded it in on another car. It had painted lettering not decals like the original 50 cars.

Good looking car, I like what's done to it.

Mine is the 580 VIN on that list. Driven by Russell Romine. There are other lists which give a lot more information.
