Is there an agreed method on re-building the carrier on a 489? I've been reading scads of messages on the net and the more I read, the more confusing it gets! The whole backlash/preload deal seems to have 5 different methods and I'd settle for just one that works.

It's very simple. Step 1: light a Stogie. Step2: pour yourself a scotch. Step 3: do what you think will work and hope for the best.
After that fails execute follow up procedure. Step 1: light a Stogie. Step 2: pour yourself a double scotch. Step 3: repeat step two.

I'm good with your numbers 1 &2, but it's #3 that's a problem. Seriously, I've read dozens of opinions and there's 4-5 different ideas as to how to do this. I only need one, successful direction or am I back to going to FBBO ot FABO?
