This morning I decided to drag my booty out of the sack early 6:30 AM. There was a nice gathering at a Cars and Coffee here in the SoCal city of Riverside. About a 300 car turnout a wide collection of various years and types of cars, a smattering of Mopar, but non the less a nice turnout and a great morning. Well, as it would have it I stopped to admire a stock/mod 1969 Dodge Charger. Non stock Yellow in color with a Tan racing seated, no back seat, after market gauged interior. A built what looked to be BB power plant. As I looked at dash tag it reflected an SE 318, G code heritage '69 Charger. The owner seated with wife at back of car saw me eyeballin' the tag and hollers " by the way the car is a factory HiPo 383" Tell me guys, a '69 Charger G coded??? 383 factory HiPo car. Thanked him and his Missus for lookin', told him it was his car and I wouldn't dispute his word. Rolled my eyes and continued my looking.  Thanks,   Al

Thank you Dan, a very timely reply. Definately a G code, so a 383, 2 bbl car. An H code would've been the 383 HiPo car. Just shook my head in agreement at the 383 informative remark. Now I know should I see him again.  Thanks,   Al

because the VIN code for 383HP & 383 4bbl are the same ("H" in '68/'69 & "N" in '70/'71), all 383 4bbl engines are often incorrectly referred to as HP / MAGNUM / COMMANDO

I'll leave A-bodies out for simplicity, but for B & E-bodies:

1968: 383HP available in Road Runner & Super Bee ONLY (all 383s are turquoise)

1969: orange painted 383HP available in Road Runner & Super Bee w/o A/C & 4-speed Chargers w/o A/C ONLY

1970: the orange painted HOLLEY equipped 383HP was STANDARD in the "badged musclecars": Road Runner, Super Bee, 'cuda, Challenger R/T & OPTIONAL in Charger
****** the ONLY way to get a 383HP in ALL "other" B/E-bodies (Satellite, Coronet 500, Gran Coupe, Challenger SE, etc.) is with a 3- or 4-speed manual transmission.
****** (all the rest of the 1970 B/E-bodies are "corporate blue" painted 383 4bbls w/Carter carburetors)

1971: ALL 383 4bbl B/E-bodies are 383HP (painted orange w/HOLLEY carburetors)

NO 383HP available in C-bodies 1968-1971.

My 71 Cuda has a 383HP-727 with Carter 6125 and that's correct against the buildsheet.

My JH 1970 Challenger has one of these 383HP motors in orange with the Holley carb. It's a four speed car but I never knew that engine option required the manual trans in this flat hood car. Interesting.

But Dan is referencing 70, not 71... In 71 a 6125s is correct on a 383 HP

Dan refers to the 71 383 HP in the last line above

Yup, missed it, your right.... Holleys were used in 71 on all N-96 coded 383's but Carters were used on those without...
