is there a backing plate on the inside of the door for the sport mirrors before the rivnuts?

no.  i think its just the rivet-nuts.  if there were an optional plate, it would likely only be optional on the passenger side, as every driver-side door got some kind of mirror.

oh yea, there IS this optional bracket... for the "remotely controlled" mirror on the driver side.  its like a L-bracket with a large hold at one end, about 1-inch diameter.  the cables from the mirror route through it on their way to the door panel.  it's to keep the cables away from the glass.  But many cars, where the mirror was added when it wasn't a factory option are missing it, and things work out just fine.
