It is installed below the switch panel in the dash

Is it in a 1974 ? Looks like it could be part of the seat belt interlock system  :dunno:

Alan is correct this is part of the '74 Dodge and Plymouth seat belt interlock system I can remember these things were not loved. The box in question hooks into the under dash wire loom, where not sure.this can be over ridden be disconnecting the wires under both drivers and passengers seat as not to interfere with starting the car. The plastic elect. boxes come in different colors, not sure why. Have seen tan and the one I sold which was blue.  Thanks,   Al

Can k leave it off?

I don't think so.

I took min off one day 25 years ago and the car tried to start on its own.  Maybe there were other issues..maybe not.  TO be safe I would leave it hooked up.
1974 Cuda. 360 / A500 OD.  Yes its pink, no its not my wife's car!  Yes I drive it.
