I'm getting ready to put my  6 pack (barrel) set up on and am going to start with a new mechanical fuel pump. Ben having problems with the cheap stock pumps. I'm looking at the Edelbrock performer RPM street, Carter strip super mech., or the Holley 12-360-11.  I'm keeping the stock 5/16 fuel line. The edelbrock has 3/8 inlets and outlets and wont be available till Dec. so any preferance between the carter or Holley. Both are pretty close to same gph ( 120,110) and psi (6, 6.5to 8). And do you think I should run a fuel regulator.  I'm getting advice both ways.  Some say yes with a return line (or not) or not needed. Car is just street driven, no strip time.  Thanks.   Doug

Quick fuel carburetor, 2X the cubic inch displacement of the engine in CFM's .  :alan2cents:

I'm not expert on your questions - but couple thoughts
If you are having pump issues, is your tank properly vented? I used to go through pumps on my '73 Satellite till one day I realized the pumps were working extra hard against tank vacuum as the fuel went down cause I have capped off the vent line  :headbang:.
Carbs are fuel level devices - not pressure sensitive as such - so as long as the pump is a low pressure pump (5-6 psi) I don't see the need for a regulator. If you are running an electric pump that produces higher pressure then yes you need something to bring it down as the carb float valve can only hold back low pressure.
I can only see needing a return line if you are running an electric pump with higher pressure and a regulator as the regulator needs to dump that extra pressure / fuel somewhere. Regulator and return line go together if needed I would say. Never had a return line with a carb - but I know a neighbor who went from EFI to carb and then you would need a regulator and a return line (which the efi already had).

If you have a big block, look at the fuel pump push rod as a potential source of fuel pump issues.
As to your question of brand preference, mine would be Carter and I would not add a regulator.

Not much to choose between the 2 as you said , go with what is available , Holley carbs are good & will generally handle 7 PSI ok without a reg as long as the float is set correctly , you might want it a bit low if you are close to 7 PSI

The Carter Street pump works best and has been the most consistent over the last 40 years
Yes I know six pak tuning...so for the OP - out there somewhere was a guide to help alleviate the old wives tales about tuning the six pak. Try the lift off hood forum for that document
