I may be picking up a 340 block that is believed to have been border .030. Other than a good visual of the cylinders, cam and crank bearing surfaces, what should I look for? Also available is a steel crank and factory rods.

At .030 you want it to be usable so no ridge, no gouges in the bores etc. If he wants more than a few hundred for it I would make the sale subject to a sonic and magnaflux test.

I would want critical measurements taken such as deck flatness, bore diameter, cam bore, and crank bore with the caps torqued. Also, I would want to check for cracks by having the block Magnafluxed. You definitely don't want to find a crack after you build up the engine.

Basically, I'd take it to a reputable engine machine shop and have it checked out. They will know what and how to check it out. Good luck!
