I currently have an HP383 that runs great and is in excellent condition. Runs smooth, quiet and uses zero oil.

I personally would love to have 440 on my hockey stick instead of 383 because its more cool, but is it worth it ? Is there that much more seat of the pants power ?

Stock 383 vs 440 for just street driving? A little but not much. You'd be better off putting your money towards stroking your 383.

My 340/416 stroker is night and day different from stock. I know several people who stroked the 400 and made very impressive numbers while maintaining pump gas streetabiloty.

This would be the way to go especially if it is the car's matching numbers block. I like the 383 because it is a short stroke engine short strokes handle higher rpm then long stroke because piston speed will always be lower at any given rpm. 383 were great in standard spec just look how successful the Road Runner was.

440 has a lot more stroke than the 383 so it has more torque.
But like other have said I would stroke a big block , you can take a 383 out to 435 ci or a 400 to 451 or build a 440 to 512 & you would be close to 440 ci with any of those combos

LEAVE THE 383
PUT THE 440 DECALS ON IT
WHO WILL KNOW
SAVE YOUR MONEY

This is what I was thinking.
Unless you have money to spend and want to build an engine. Nothing wrong with that.

I would leave it as is. There's nothing wrong with a 383 for street use and putting 440 decals on may fool others but you would still know.
Stroking is the way to go if you need more torque for sure, but if the 383 is fine for your driving forget the stickers and just enjoy it.

I like my 383, had one before that i liked. Family members had 383's and had good luck with them for years.   :alan2cents:

Depends what you are doing with it. 383's are great engines as well. If you are cruising around and not racing the 383 will run great and get better gas mileage. If you want to dip into the 10's at the strip it easier to achieve with more cubic inches. Lots of 383 Road Runners kept up with 440 GTX's from the factory in stock form. Once you start modifying them it is easier to keep it driveable with a longer stroke.
