Need to replace the fuel pump on a 440. Wondering about the rod. How do I know if it's worn too much? Any tricks for installing the new one? There's a pipe plug under the fuel pump opening. Is that to give access to the rod?

According to this they are 3.220" long. Some grease on a cold engine helps keep it in place long enough to get the pump arm in.

Thanks @Brads70 I don't understand what the grease does. How does rubbing grease on the rod hold anything?
My rod is now jammed. I think I have to remove the plug to get it out. Do I grease it and shove it back in the same hole?

Also, does the top bolt for the alternator go into a water jacket? I want to remove the alternator to make it easier to work on.

I'm really resisting a comment here... :-X  :haha:
Holds it up in the bore longer than just oil. I'd pull it out and measure it first.

AND, make sure the rod isn't burred over preventing it's easy removal. Nice of uncle Brad to supply the correct length, too.
