Just installed a complete MSD Ignition system on my street build 440 and am sampling different timing curves.  Should I shoot to have total timing "all in" at 2,500, 3,000, or 3,500 RPM?

440 is a typical street build i.e. headers, intake, 4bbl, cam (Mopar purple shaft 284/484), MSD ignition system.  Has 3.73 rear gears and is a 4 speed.

No answer here, I'm still learning too. What is your initial timing?

As quick as you can without it pinging, try for 2500.

I agree get the timing is as soon as possible & use a short timing curve , generally more advance at idle helps

Thanks for the replies.  I'll install an advance spring combination that'll put me all in at 2,500 rpm and see how it goes.

i use 16- 18 initial w 36 total . all in @ 2400... i have 915 closed chamber heads..[10-25-1] comp ratio,   16-18 really helps idol richness when its warmed up... i am on factory dual point . an msd may help it even more..... premium reg gas ! [440-6] dyno set up...

16-18 seems like a lot. I assume that is w/o vacuum advance connected? I currently closer to 12 on a 440 with OEM electronic ignition (mild build - headers, M1 intake w/750cfm, 67 closed chamber heads, and Comp Cam). I still max out at 36 but not sure what rpm.

16-18 Will get you a nice clean idol.....  may seem like a lot , but it works really well..... no starter issues unless you get above 18...

440/512 stroker, Bullet custom hydraulic roller cam, Aluminum heads, Holley dominator single plane intake, Quickfuel 880 CFM, Electronic distributor, TTI 1 7/8" headers, 3" X pipe exhaust, 91 octane.  Vacuum advance disconnected, 18 degrees at idle and 36 degrees all in at 2500 RPM.  Starts easy, runs cool even on 90+ days, and runs strong.    :stayinlane:
