My wife's ransmission doesn't shift into Drive anymore. I'm going to bring it in to have it looked at but I am weary about this. What's the average cost to have a 727  rebuilt?

Fair amount of variables, is the trans going to be delivered in or out of the car, and whats wrong when they open it up.

To give a guesstimate, I delivered a 727, no car, they did a complete rebuild with replacement of only wear items and to check everything, rebuild included redoing the torque converter and replacement of a cracked pressure plate. . . $722

:iagree: It depends what is wrong with it. A little pre-diagnosis goes a long way. Do you have reverse and/or manual 1st (shift into "1")? Also check the fluid color and level on the dipstick.

I just inquired to have it checked and they said if it needs to be rebuilt it was $2k. I thought  :unbelievable:

We have reverse and it does shift into 1st. The fluid level is on the mark and it is clean, good color.

I'm guessing the $2k would be for R&R.
I carried in a 518 with shift kit, they did the rebuild and put in the shift kit for $1k.
Taking the tranny out and reinstalling is the hard part.

That's good news! This means you have input to the trans and line pressure. M1 and reverse working points to the low one way clutch (aka "sprag") is not holding for automatic 1st gear. The trans repair shouldn't cost more than 1K plus r&r, IMO. I would recommend using a shop that will rebuild your transmission and not use a recon exchange. This way you know what you have and keep numbers matching if that's the case.  :bigthumb:

$2k is a rip. This is a well known, reputable builder. Get one of these and hire someone to re and re it for you.

I thought the 2K was a little steep myself. I didn't think removal and reinstall was going to be that hard. I was thinking of doing that myself if it came down to it. This shop was recommended also but I think I will shop around.
