I have an extra 904 trans and was thinking of trying to rebuild it.  I don't really have an immediate use for it, but it's just kind of a bucket list thing since I've never tackled one.  ANyone have favorite resources/tips, gotchas, etc?  Thanks.

I did my 727 a year or so ago - much easier than the 604 and 41LEs I've done.
My favorite reference is the factory service manual - but I did review a few u-tube references before starting.
Ordered my kit from TransParts Warehouse I think in California - good shipping even across the border.
The trickiest part on mine was undoing a race shift kit and figuring out what kit was in it already and how to undo it - it was a drag car in the past - I left it as an HD kit but I did not want a race kit.
Have lots of parts trays to keep parts organized in as they come out - watch orientation of parts like thrust washers and all as you take them out.

I rebuilt my 904.

Best help was a u-tube video series for the "904 for rookies".    Its a 16 part tutorial...    starts with https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=mopar+a904+overhaul+for+rookies+part+1

I bought a "master rebuild kit" from off of ebay.    WORD OF WARNING...make sure you buy the kit that includes your year of 904.   I thought i did, but, it turns out my 904 had been replaced with one that was older...and many of the parts did not fit and i had to buy replacement parts as i ran into problems.  Check to make sure you know yours by looking at the number on the drivers side of the case !!  On there you will find the 4 digit mopar date.   online there are decoders to turn that date into a mfg date.

Tools you will need:
--Lots of snap ring pliers about 3 different sizes.
--hammer and full set of wrenches, socket wrenches
--hammer puller (to remove the front fluid pump...tho they claim you can tap it out once you remove the pan and valve body from the insude.

--the rear clutch pac assembly has to be compressed to remove the snap rings that hold it together.   There is a strong spring inside.   There is a special tool for this, but, you can make your own......this is covered in one of the u-tube videos.

Download a service manual from my mopar for the appropriate year.   Some have recommended the TCI service manual, but, i found it a waste of money as you can get all of the information from the free mopar Service manual.

I wasted a lot of time, measuring a lot of things like the manual says...  However, the best advice i found was simply If the transmission hasn't been modified, then it was built right from the factory and if you use OEM type replacement parts for the clutches then there is no reason that the tolerances wont be correct so DONT BOTHER MEASURING.

It isn't all that tough...honest !!    Mine worked fine when i put it back together !!
