I tried to do some searching for past posts regarding this but came up short.  I did learn some things from older posts, but not enough to proceed.
I have both axle shafts removed from the housing and had the third member removed.  I felt it all looked good, so I am just putting it back together.  We put the third member back in and have the axle housing re-installed in the car.  Now I want to re-install the axle shafts.  I don't have a clue what I have to do regarding the axle bearing pre-load (end play).  It seems from what I read that I need to install the side that does not have an adjuster, then install the other side and adjust the end play.  Can anyone give me some more detail of the procedure, or point me to someplace where this is already documented?
Thank you.

I scanned through the Factory Service Manual and couldn't find anything either.

Try this post for starters:

There appears to be similar posts on forbbodiesonly.com as well.   Note that for the post above there's different guidance (or at least different opinions) depending on whether you have a SureGrip or not.

I put "green" bearings on my rear axle in anticipation of eventually adding rear discs so I can't comment based on experience.   Based on some posts I've read since, I may be going back to the stock bearings, especially since the $$$ flowing into my car on other things will make the rear disc upgrade a long ways in the future.

I just did a tapered axle installation with a floating thrust plug carrier.

The information in the previous post says:

Step 1a ...establish an axle shaft endplay of .013 to .023.
Step 1d ...this puts all of the slop on the passenger side so you can adjust it all with the passenger adjuster.  Once that is done, adjust the collar so that you have .006-.010 end play on the passenger side

This procedure is in conflict with itself.  Whatever endplay you have on the passenger side is identical to the driver's side.  The thrust plug causes both axles to push on each other.  So whatever you push on one side, is pushed back on the other side.

The only time that this is not true is if the thrust plug is biased against the carrier cross shaft.  That is not ever supposed to happen, and if it is happening...something else is wrong.  (since the thrust plug has about 1/4 inch of travel...)

According to the 1970 shop manual, the axle shaft end play for the 8-3/4 axle housing is specified at .008-.018 inch.  I like to set mine at .010 for new bearings, and about .015 for a used set.

These procedures worked well.  Thank you all.
