I've got a 1970 383 in my 73 challenger, and I'm going to run a Holley sniper EFI kit on it.
When I have restored other cars, including a 68 383 in my charger, I have gone with a pertronics solid state electronic ignition that goes inside the stock distributor, and I've had good results with them.
Im debating about running electronic ignition on the challenger, but I also like the old school ness of the stock distributor, and setting it up on my synchrograph.

I'm looking for opinions on running points, or internal distributor Pertronix, or a billet electronic distributor.
I like the first 2 options better because of the stock appearance but am open to your experiences and opinions on all 3.

1 Wild R/T

I've run all three.. I use to use points cause they are pretty reliable & are easy to service on the side of the road if needed...  However in the last ten years or so quality points & more importantly condensers has been a problem... If you want to run point search for vintage tune up parts... :alan2cents:

Pertonix I've had very good luck with...

Billet distributor, pretty good if you can get past the look....

NOS accel points still available. They run real good!

Another vote for pertronix.

An electronic distributor still needs curving and tuning work. I feel like Option 3) is kinda more for people that a) have a completely crapped out dizzy, and b) don't have a dizzy, c) thinks buying something new and expensive means better performance, or d) cares nothing about stock looks and just wants to do what all the magazines say to do.

It's really more about option 1) and option 2). Either way, you still need to send it in somewhere to get it optimized for your fuel and engine combo. Faron Rhoads is a good person for this. Then the only question then is do you want to keep points, or go with Petronix.

Weekend warriors, or cars that don't see very many miles, I've been happy with my Accel Points (really just "point" as there just one). Faron tested them to 6500 and they were dead-on. I haven't set the dwell in over a year and it's been steady at 32.5. IDK, seems like I'm alright with points. If I drove it 5,000 miles a year It may be a different story. Adjusting these cars is what makes them fun and for me, adjusting points is appearing to be something I do every other year and takes 10 minutes.

By the way, I am open to hearing factual tests, but a performance set of points that are dialed in appropriately vs an electronic ignition equals zero horsepower difference.

If the EFI can control the Ign curve my vote is Crank trigger using a stock dist without curve such as early 80 with the computer on the air cleaner lean Burn

So I finally decided to throw my Pertronix igniter 1 kit into my distributor, and when I went to pull the points and condenser out I found an old electronic type ignition already in place; this isn't a huge surprise as the car had an old yellow rectangular coil mounted to the passenger inner fender that I removed.
As you can see this set up has a plate that is screwed from underneath onto the top plate of the distributor, under the rotator shaft gear.
I'm a bit stumped how to go about removing this old plate/system .
Do I have to remove the whole distributor shaft from the distributor, or does someone have a better suggestion how I can remove it?

@kawahonda I also like to run points. Where can I get NOS Accel points?

kawahonda

I need to find a source also. I would suggest eBay, etc. I sadly threw away the Accel package, so I cannot give you a part #. I didn't think that they were all that rare though, should be easy-ish to find.

My distrib guy found no scatter with them, even at 6500 RPM.

Can't ask for anymore than that!

I THINK you want Accel # 8301 (standard RPM) or #8302 (high RPM) for the single point distributor.

They're available if you look hard enough.

They do appear to be hard to find. I think mine is the #8302. When it comes time for replacement in 2-3 years, I may have to go pertronix, whether I like it or not.

if you want to remove the original pick up , Not sure why , use 2 screw drivers & pry the reluctor up off the top of the shaft

To remove the plate remove the reluctor as Chryco mentioned and then remove 3 screws on the side and lift the plate off.
