With the original 4 speed and with the Tremec and BB pressure plate and later with Diaphram pressure plate.  I've always had to push the clutch pedal all the way to the floor until it hits in order to ger a smooth shift. Even then, it still has a small amount of resistance before going into gear. The pedal has 1/2" - 1" of play. Is it possible to have the wrong Z bar ? If so, how do you determine ?   I've had this car for 6 years and I'm always finding stuff thats not correct.

Check out Brewer's Performance website, they have Z-bars listed with dimensions for various applications. Also there is a threaded rod attached to the Z-bar that actuates the clutch fork which may need adjustment in your case.
