340 spread bore intake vs. an aftermarket edelbrock or similar. Which would be better for performance?

Rich G.

Just the weight difference alone would probably make a difference.

Weight savings aside, the stock 340 spreadbore is hard to beat for most 'cruisin' cars that run 1500 to 4500 rpm as most of us do... best if you block crossover ports with intake gasket that has them blocked off, though... saves a lot of grief with carbs...

If you have a high revving cam/headers/valves/whatever, and spend a lot of time in the throttle, then a good single plane is a better choice for the higher rpm. As far a brand for that, I'll leave that for other members with more experience to recommend what works best...

Cool. I can pick up a 1971 340 intake for $100. Seems like a good deal.

The 340 intakes are a really good piece actually.

I ditched the factory 340 cast iron Intake for an aluminum dual plane air gap. No more rust and save a lot of weight. Also easier to port match aluminum than cast iron.
