I have a 727 with a reverse manual valve body hooked up to a 440 with a cam setup.  Seems like when I shift through the gears, it is either starting in first gear and and still in first when I select second gear the get 3rd gear when selected or when I select 1st gear I'm actually starting in second and then still in second when I shift into second gear then get third gear when selected

Any ideas what the likely problem is or am I looking a a transmission rebuild?

Does the shifter feel sloppy? Could be a little plastic bushing that some of the rods connect at disintegrated or cracked and fell out  .

 :iagree:

Best bet is to get it up on hoist or jack-stands, and watch the linkage/shifter arm while someone operates the shifter. There are only 6 detents total, P-R-N-D-2-1, so you should be able to confirm that it hits each of them...

Could be worn plastic bushings in pivot rods, worn holes in arms, or worn pins that go into the arms...

If linkages all look good and it hits all detents correctly, then it is internal to the tranny...
