I have to replace the rear main seal on a 440. What head is on the studs of the main cap. Hex? Torx? If Torx, what size?6

I guess it would depend if they are factory or aftermarket bolts ?
The factory just used 12 point bolts, nothing fancy :alan2cents:

I hope so because I'll have to buy a socket. Thanks Alan.

You don't have 12 point sockets ? Just about every socket set I had came with 12 point, it was 6 point that were the "good ones"  :haha: :haha: You better check again, being a farmer I'm sure you got a box full of 12 point sockets.. :tool:

Those aren't factory. More likely ARP or Pioneer. Are they 7/16ths Murray? If they were oem they'd have hex heads. Do you have a 1/2 or 9/16ths 12 point Murray?

You are dealing with 2 different bolts ,
The seal retainer which is  the only one you need to remove is 3/8" 12 point
if you are going to pull the main cap 3/4" 6 point bolts
The side seal are the tough part to get resealed , I have put a thin bead of right stuff sealer between the block & seal plate inside of the block to make sure it seals in the past .
It cam help to offset the end of the seal a little so the mating surface at the end of the seal is not even with the mating surface of the seal plate .

@blown motor . I have a spare rear main seal, the 2 side gaskets and the seal cap and socket. You can have everything but the socket

I beg to differ, the OEM 440 rear main seal bolts I've come across have been 12 point, and CP has nailed down the size socket...3/8" 12 point :bigthumb:

ALL reputable engine shops I've dealt with have tossed the original rear main seal cap in favor of the new billit style which seals 100 times better than the OEM style

@Chryco Psycho @anlauto sorry, I confused the main cap with the seal cap.
@RJChallenger I have the seals already but thanks.
@jimynick I don't know what they are yet. I haven't pulled the pan. This is on the truck, not the Charger.

I didn't realize that a standard 12 pt socket would work. I thought it looked a little different.

@Chryco Psycho Can I use black Permatex in stead of the Right stuff? I have it and I'm having trouble finding the right stuff.

Okay, I started into this project and I hope it's not too deep for me. There's a windage tray with a cork gasket on each side. Should I clean up the tray flange with some sandpaper? I have 600. What gaskets should I use? Cork or something else?
