Looking at some 3.55 gears for a 489 center.  They are reportedly made in Italy, but I don't know the brand.  I did some research and they may be Motive Gear, and general commentary on the Italy made gears is pretty good.  Anyone have experience with Italian made gearsets?

Thanks

Weird place to make them? Then ship all the way over here? Better than China I suppose?  What factories too busy over here? :dunno:  Let me call Donald!  :))

I got all my 8.75 rebuild stuff from Cass (Dr Diff) - 3.55 gear set (reasonably priced and I'm pretty sure it was a motive gear set as well), sure grip with his personal touch and the full rebuild kit with crush sleeve elimination.

I have a pegleg 489 center that has 3.23 gears in it, and the car came with a 741 pegleg with 2.76 gears.  Since I'm putting in a 46RH transmission I wanted a minimum of 3.55 gears; its not a huge change over the 3.23s but I like the calculated performance and revs better, and I like moving to the stronger center section.  I'm going to buy the gears; everything I've found so far says that the Italian made gears are good quality and work well.

I already have an NOS cone type sure grip to complete the set.

Have used and sold motive gears in the past. Absolutely no issues.

I would check with Cass (Dr. Diff) first.  He also makes custom gear sets.  I bought a custom set of 3:23 gears to replace the OEM 4:10s for my 1970 'Cuda's dana 60 a few years so I could drive on the freeway. They have worked flawlessly with no issues at all.  (No I'm not do not want to sell the 4:10s.  They're in storage for the next owner after I'm gone)

I have two excellent used OEM 3.23 centers, one 489 pegleg and one 742 with clutch type.  I also picked up a new OEM 2.94 gear set cheap (don't remember the case type, its buried in storage).

I've considered 4.10s since with the 46RH transmission that gives a final drive ration of 2.83 while making getting there on the street potentially a lot more fun.

I decided after reading up on others' experiences that 3.55 was the minimum.  A couple of local friends in the hobby are trying to get me to go with 4.56s or 4.88s or thereabout.  Final drive ratio 3.14 and 3.36 respectively.  But this is not going to be a racer, drag car with a high winding small block.  Its going to be a weekend cruiser thats fun to drive on the street with the ability to make a comfortable freeway road trip and reasonable RPMs using a moderately improved 318.  I think the 3.55s are the sweet spot; I can always regear one of the other center sections if it isn't ideal.

Thanks all for the feedback.
