My slapstick shifter worked fine when I was driving my car.  Now that I have it apart I cleaned it up really good and decided to lube all of the moving parts as it just seemed like the right thing to do.

As I reassembled the slap stick shifter ( its sill out of the car) I tested it and it seems like from 2nd to third I hear and feel next to nothing.  Before lubing, it clearly clicked into third.  It still does going to third it's just not a hard aggressive transition.  Maybe I'll be fine.

Any idea what I did besides lubing it and if it was wrong of me to lube it should I just try to get rid of it all?

Thanks

I can provide more information but essentially I lubed everything liberally.

Sorry but I just thought of another good question. How many full turns should I screw the "slapstick knob" onto the shifter if that make sense?

Thanks

I've never counted turns, the button winds up sitting about 7/16-1/2" higher than the ball.... If it's to high it looks odd but works, If it's to low you can't shift because the gate won't clear the detents...  Just a guess but it the grease you use is a little to heavy it may prevent the detent & gate from moving fully.... Cleaning the grease out shifter doesn't cost a dime, worth trying....

Thanks Wild RT.

I removed some grease.  It doesn't "click" as hard as it used too, but it doesn't shift past any gears and clearly goes into each gear.

I'm probably overthinking it and can always remove it and work on it once the car is put back together.  Thanks

Quoteits still out of the car

There's your problem. The shifter itself doesn't give you that "click" feeling. That "click" when you go into gear is the detent ball and spring on the valve body inside the trans. Hook the shifter back up and it will feel right again.
