I had my 727 trans rebuilt about a year ago. The speedo seal seems to be leaking. The trans shop told me it was my speedo cable.  It wasn't the cable. My understanding, the speedo side should be dry.  I want to replace the seal but I wasn't sure which way it's installed. When I removed the seal, the flat part of the seal was toward the speedometer cable. When you look at the seal the opening is tapered. Also, is there supposed to be a grove cut in the speedo gear housing to retain the clip or is it just pressed in?  Thanks

top picture goes towards the oil , there is no groove for the clip it just holds the seal in place under tension as there really is nor pressure against the seal . The speedo cable should be dry .

Thanks. I wasn't sure it was installed correctly since it leaked after it was rebuilt.

I have also had trouble getting them to stay 100% dry .

I had the same problem recently and I ended up putting in a second one of those seals after I put the metal clip in I put the second seal on.    I heard that might help and I know it's not factory and maybe it's not the best advice but I just thought it would be worth mentioning.
