So I have been looking for a decent '61-71 D100 Sweptline Short bed for a long time.  There are a lot of Cheby and Ferds but the Dodge D100 are tough to find, and short beds are even harder.  I have been close on two, missing them within a couple of hours of selling.  On Thursday I found a 1970 on CL in Wilcox, AZ which is about 80 mi east of Tucson.  I called and talked to the owner, retired and just looking to sell off some of his cars. The truck looked to be a decent driver which is what I prefer to a trailer queen, and was at a good price and the owner said he would hold it for me and give me a ride from the airport.  I looked at the weather which was clear the whole way until Saturday afternoon in Denver, I knew it was going to be a quick trip.  I called my partner in crime, @CudaKat, booked us one way tickets and we were in Tucson at 10:00 am Friday.

We met the owner, along with his friend who was an ex-Marine and holstering a .45 on his hip.  An interesting way to start the trip.  :help:

Both guys ended up being super nice, thankfully because this could have gone way wrong.  We went to the owner house, looked at the truck over, talked him down on the price for a couple of issues and struck a deal. We knew we had to change the oil, replace the starter, and the alternator belt for the 14 hr drive back to Colorado.  The owner he bought us lunch, went to the local Napa with us to get the right parts and the ex-Marine offered his garage and tools to work on the truck. It turned out he was a World Champion shooter and had hunted animals all over the world.

We hit the road around 4:00 pm Friday and drove all night. We stopped for dinner and to change the fuel sending unit since there was fumes from a small leak in the gas tank, which is behind the seat in the cab.  This will eventually swapped to a new tank under the bed.

We rolled into town around 6:30 pm, parked it in @CudaKat's outbuilding since my garage is full, and it started snowing 2 hours later. Perfect timing!

That truck looks sweet!   Great shape!  And I really like it in red.
More details on the truck?

Quite the weather change from here to AZ.
Those are some huge cactus!

And that bison!  Look at the knobs on that ole Duggar!
Sounds like that fella was a hell of a shot!

Was the duster the old guys?

Good job! You have to find those with paint that you can live with or you're upside down instantly. Chrome rear bumper is a really good feature as they are hard to find. I bought this one in Az. about 8 or 9 years ago.

Great story.  I don't think I would've had the stones to make my initial ride in an old vehicle a 14 hour hike.   Nice score! :bravo:

Josh, you would've been in heaven at this guys place and had many stories to share.  The '74 Duster belongs to a friend of his and it was not running when we were there or we would have asked him to start it up!

The D100 is a 318 auto and is a good driver which is just the way I like them!

Josh, I believe that's a Water Buffalo, not a Bison.

Yes it is, but he had a bison too that he got from South Dakota!

Reminds me of another road trip I went on with my buddy Darcy when he bought one too. Cool truck with factory A/C , I'm thinking that must be rare as it was expensive for "just a truck" back in the day when it was new. Needs a OD 4 speed swapped in though.....
