unfortunately I need to make an emergency trip to the VA in La Jolla to pick up my dad and move him here to CO. Does anyone in the area have a driveway I could park my van ('92 GMC conversion van) and crash in it for a few days? Or any ideas on locations that are cheap/free? (is camping in Walmart parking lots still a thing?) I'd be out of your hair, I'll have my hands full as it is.

Thanks!

It is. California is pretty "homeless friendly" but if you have brown skin, bring your ID and passport, because ICE and big brother are always watching.

best wishes for you and your father and... safe travels.

avatar_ec_co @ec_co Run an online search for "dispersed camping". It's places that allow free camping albeit with no amenities. It's a thing.

I don't know about San Diego, but california has lots of people living in cars. I am sure you can find some areas to park. Usually not in the best areas or in industrial parks. When the LA area mopar show (spring/fall fling) occur, I rent camping space at state parks. It is pretty cheap, about $30. Not sure if they are anywhere close to where you expect to be or if driving daily is an option. Below are the state and county sites for campsites. Good luck.

I very much appreciate the advice team, sounds like I have some options. I'm heading off now.

There should be some low cost (under $100) motels and inns a short drive from La Jolla and very safe. Good luck with your travel.
