Your right Neil! Years ago I had a wrecker and a rollback - both were 10 sp. I couldn't teach the idiots 10 they'd never get 18

Life is to be viewed thru the windshield. Not rear view mirror.
You are the only one in charge of your destiny.

Oh yea.   I have been driving a concrete mixer truck for almost 20 years now. When I first started we had an old yard truck with double sticks. When your truck broke down or you pissed off the dispatcher you had the luxury of driving that POS. The first time driving it I had to take a load of concrete up a long --pretty steep hill. That was an adventure.  I found a low enough gear to move up hill and just left it there.  My shifting was deffinately not as smooth as that kids.  After a couple of days I almost got the hang of it. Those transmissions were sure built tough tho.  This spring I have the pleasure of getting a new truck. It has an automatic in it.  Life is good now.         :Thud:

I remember the one I drove with a PTO.  They told me it means Power Take Off but I was never sure they were telling me the truth. I was a kid back then.

For those following along
PTO is power take off , usually running hydraulics to raise & lower dump box or running a winch or turning the drum on a mixer .
The 5 & 4 is 2 transmissions bolted together so you would select a gear in the main trans & then you have 4 gears in the second trans to change the drive ratio , splitting the main gear 4 times to keep the engine in the powerband , this gives you 20 gears , you shift main into 1 & work through 1-4 in the second trans , then shift into 2 in the main & back to 1 & work through the 4 gears in the second trans  up into 5 main & it has to be done in the right order or you have no rotation in the second trans to shift !! Now if that is not confusing enough try down shifting in the reverse order . to make things even worse the second trans shifts in a U pattern not the normal H  :Thud:
Once you have driven a 5&4 you will never forget it !!
The Modern 8-10-12-15-18 spd Eaton Roadrangers are so much better  :veryexcited:
