Looking to purchase a Go Pro either new or possibly used and need some advice on what to get. I`ll be mainly using it for doing in car, on-helmet dirt bike and my lame youtube car videos. I would some sort of stabilization but really know nothing about them and a bunch of models avaialble. As usual not looking to spend a fortune as I don`t ever plan to be a pro at his stuff - it`s just for fun.

You can't go wrong with any of the models of gopros really. I stoped buying them at the pro 4 or black whatever they called it. It's a great little camera however I just looked up the features on the latest model 9 and it's impressive  and at the sale price of $350 it's hard to say no to it. Now I'm thinking of upgrading again. A quick check on eBay tells me for about $150 you can score a used 6 and 7's and 4 for about $50-$100. If your budget allowed it get a new one my two cents.

I use a Garmin VIRB XE. I like it because it will display MPH, G-force, altitude, and other stuff. https://youtu.be/5hJdHfezBL4

I don't own one but I have been researching buying one. From what I've found, I want the "hypersmooth" image stabilization that is found in Hero 7s and newer. The difference between a 5 and a 7 seems significant when it comes to smooth video.

I`ve been watching a lot of dirt bike videos and with the rough terrain they ride on there is a noticeable difference in stabilization with the newer models.

I have a 4 and 5.    Work great!  I like the smaller version without the digital screen for my bow and arrow hunting.
However, the newer models are larger but have the stabalization features.  The extra stabalization makes a huge difference on dirtbike videos.  My main issue with the newer versions is that the on off button is not the same configuration.
The earlier versions have a very simple, single button that you push that gives you 3 loud beeps when turned on and 5 loud beeps when turned off.   The newer version is not so simple as that.  I have to make sure that my buddies helmet camera is on and running for him often.  Also, the newer versions have a stop frame option and you have to make sure not to run on that picture when trying to do videos.  It can ruin some great videos if your in the wrong selection.
Also, the newer versions have waaaay better coloron the videos.
I suggest getting the newer models.  Older model is great for the few things I use it for, bow and arrow and occasional scuba diving.
  Get the new one.

The last few generations have a mode called "hypersmooth".  It acts like an internal gimbal to keep the video as smooth as possible.  I have a GoPro 8 black and it works pretty good.  I had a few earlier ones, and they were ok.

I use the GoPro Hero 7 Black and it is a great little camera for what it is. As other have mentioned the image stabilization in the 7-9 is really impressive! The big advantage to the 9 black over the 7 and 8 is the incorporation of a monitor on the front side of the camera for those that want to use the GoPro as a vlogging camera. The 8 has a vlogging kit available that allows you to attach an external front facing monitor and the 7 has no option for a front facing monitor. So if a monitor on the front for vlogging is of no concern to you then a Hero 7 black should work just fine. I do also recommend adding an external mic to the GoPro as the audio isn't the greatest. Hope this helps.
