Are there any amateur radio folks out there? W8OOT

Cuda Cody

Breaker Breaker 17, this here is Cuda Cody, anyone else out there read me, come on back?  Or is that CB talk?   :cooldance:  I wish I was in to it.  Always seemed cool, but haven't had the time yet to try it.

Relatively new at it, but I've made QSO's in Australia already.

There are a few in my neighborhood with some huge whips over their houses.

Sometimes it makes me wonder if they know they are sterile already.

I am WB8SVW, my Dad is N8WS & my Mom is WD8ASV! Got my novice class @ age 11. For many years I was the youngest to pass the test until a 9 year old got his a few years later. Coincidentally we are now friends. I am now a General class & this is my 43rd year as a ham. I don't operate as much as I used to, but love Field Day & contests!

You can talk all over the world easily with Amateur Radio. Personally I have about 80 countries confirmed. My father has a couple of hundred confirmed. It is not so much distance that is difficult, it is rare countries & small islands that only have maybe one or two hams that are coveted! Also some countries with oppressive Gov'ts rarely allow contact with western operators.

Did any of the other Hams on the forum participate in "Field Day" this past weekend???

For those unfamiliar with it, Field Day is an emergency preparation test for Amateur Radio. Since we are routinely the only form of communication that does not "go down" during disasters, we have a yearly test weekend setting up with battery or generator power out in a field for a 24 hour test. It has been made into a contest to garner more interest as well as make it more fun.

Our club (Westpark Radio Ops) made well over 600 contacts during the 24 hours of operation in almost all 50 states. A good time was had by all!

God Bless

Where is a good source of info for a beginner? Also any recommendations for gear to startup only to see if it's something I'd like?

Unfortunately, we have not had time to focus on anything other than the Duster for the past 5 months. Sorry we missed it...sounds like a lot of fun.

  I agree with Laura,
The ARRL site offer the most information. Before I purchased any equipment, I would see if you could visit someone in your are that is an active ham. You might look up an Amateur Radio club in your area & attend a meeting. There are always many willing to help out new guys!
