Herschell Spillman V-8: one of the earliest American made

My wife and I toured a local factory-turned-museum where amusement park carousels used to be made.    The company started in the late 1800's.   The horses, frogs, dogs and such which the riders sat upon were hand carved out of different woods - really impressive craftsmanship.   In a corner of the museum I peaked over an "employees only" divider and got a glimpse of this Herschell Spillman V-8 which was made by a subsidiary of the carousel company.   This was apparently produced around 1916.  According to a couple of posts found via Google, this was the 2nd American made V-8 (Caddy was first in 1914).
