Has anybody ever replied to these emails just to string them along, see what their plan is ?

I went as far as having a scammer FedEx me a check just so I could cost them a little money.   At the time (10 years ago?), my bank told me that they would close my account if I put a fake check in so I didn't do anything more.   It was fun to get their next letter asking me to transfer some of the money back to through a money order because they "accidentally" sent me too much.   

I talked with the police but they had no interest in pursuing them because the scammers usually cover their tracks too quickly for them to find anything.

I had a very similar thing happen to me...I took it to the police and got a similar story too.. 

I would just like to send this poor dying lady a nice long winded email about how I understand her, and how I recently lost my mother, etc....how I would love to come meet her...   I don't need the money really because last year I got an inheritance from a Nigeran prince...

I would love to play along, but I'm afraid of them sending my computer a virus or something...

I don't reply to the emails, but I work in IT and when I get the calls that say "I am in urgent need of Windows Updates and they can remotely handle this for me" and there is a live person on the line, we usually have some fun and keep them on the line as long as possible. I will usually get it started by saying I have no idea what Operating System I have and to help me find out how, then ask very basic level questions to frustrate them by saying i'm not sure what to do, then say my operating system is not applicable but I know someone's who is, then hand the phone to someone else in my office them to talk to, they tell them they are using a Mac, send them to someone else, so on and so on until they finally hang up. Our record so far is like 35 minutes. I figure the more we run them around in circles and give them nothing, the less time they have to call actual vulnerable people like the elderly to victimize.

That's great...I like to have fun with the "duct cleaners" when they call.....Ducks ? We don't have ducks? we're not allowed farm animals etc...

This may be a thread hijack but what the hell, here goes.

Years ago, my then wife, got a all from carpet cleaners. She told them we had all hardwood floors. Then they said they also cleaned furniture. She told them all our furniture was leather. Then they called her a liar, that's when she hung up. FYI, we had wall to wall carpeting and cloth furniture.
