Thx for the pics, confirms what I was dealing with.
On the advice of another member here, I removed the stud and used a bolt to hold down the adapter.
Bolt head is thinner than the factory nut with captive washer, providing more clearance.

Yeah, that would be better, but I didn't want to wait and picked from what HD had on hand.
I also got Allen head cap screws, the head diameter is smaller, but the thickness was same as the nut.
