So my rider hasn't been running great and I've kinda been ignoring it.  So the other day the muffler finally fell off.  (Had been cracked for some time.). And noticed flame coming out the pipe.  Has had a ruff hi rev for awhile too.  Where should I start.   It's a brigs 17.5 hp.  I figure I'll start with the basics of plugs but after that where should I go.  Not a small eng guy at all.?  Oh sometimes when you go to low idle or shut it off it back fires through exhaust

It won't run right without the exhaust. So either weld it back on or get a new one.  Does it have a electrical solenoid on the bottom of the carb bowl?

Muffler is fixed just welded back together.  And yes it has sol on the bottom of the bowl is that a fuel shit off?

Yes "shut " off though  :))   If it's backfiring check to see it it's working when you turn the key on and off. You should feel/hear it click. Sometimes they get sticky with old fuel over the years. Remove it and spray carb cleaner and work it back and forth to clean.  Also when you want to shut it off idle the engine down before turning it off.

If that solenoid fails it can leak fuel into the cylinder causing a hyd lock and or fill up the crankcase with fuel. Neither is good. Check the oil level, if it's overfull or smells gassy change the oil asap. I always install a fuel shut off between the tank and that solenoid  as it's only a matter of time before it screws up. You just need to be " religious" about shutting it off after each use.

Straight pipe it & tune it LOL  :haha:

Thanks @Brads70.  Reinstalled the repaired exhaust and did a oil change running great.  Who would of thought a muffler was that critical.  Sol checked out ok but I will still install shit off like suggested.
