@moparmama,

I just came across this video discussing court ordered titles.  Sounds like a viable option for anyone in your position.

Obtaining a title is not that difficult, or that expensive, but it does take time (3 years before the bonded title becomes a standard title).  The process as my dealer friend told me is below -

Contact Texas Department of Motor Vehicles and request a Bonded Title Application (Form VTR-130-SOF).

Prove Ownership - Provide all documentation showing ownership, like: Bill of sale (even if it's old, I would make an OLD one up if I had to), any receipts, registration, or insurance documents

Affidavit of fact explaining how you got the vehicle and why you don't have a title, which may have to be notorized

Vehicle Inspection (if needed), some older vehicles require a VIN inspection or safety inspection.

Surety Bond: If DMV approves your application, they'll assign a bond amount (1.5× the appraised value of the vehicle).  You buy a surety bond from a licensed bonding company (usually $100–$250).

Apply for Title: Return to Tx DMV with:

  • The bond
  • Application forms
  • Supporting documentation
  • Payment for title and registration fees

Receive a Bonded Title: You'll get a Texas Bonded Title that becomes a regular title after 3 years if no one contests ownership

If it were me, I would sell it with a Bill of Sale only and let the next person deal with it.  I am sure that will lower the value considerably, but you avoid the costs of transporting so probably a wash or close to it considering you are moving and will avoid the hassle.  I would definitely ask local law enforcement to run the VIN and verify it is not stolen or on any "watch" lists; and I would expect getting 30-50% less than you would if it were titled selling with a Bill of Sale only depending on the buyer.  I would think $10-12K would be fair for Bill of Sale only :alan2cents:

Or find someone who said they can get a title for 500 bucks and risk the loss of the small amount of money.
  10-12K is wishing.  Sorry, not trying to be negative nancy but I showed many cars for sale at the moment for comparison.  That does require comparing to those cars that are actually for sale right now.
  Where in Texas?  I'm heading to Lubbock, Laredo and Corpus soon.  Could possibly take more pics or put eyes on it for someone here if they are interested.

My understanding is you could sell the car on a bonded title as well.  I personally would not be too worried about the title issue, but that is just me.  I would run the VIN through my local CHP and make sure there are no known issues, that would be enough for me but that is  a personal decision and I am not in the market so not much help - although at $5-7K maybe!!

Others are also better at assessing value, but for me, there is not a lot out there if you are looking for a good project, and this looks like a great starting platform so for me that has more value than a highly desirable car that looks like it was dragged out of the bottom of a lake :alan2cents:
