In profile, a car roughly resembles a wing. It only takes a 150 mph for an aircraft to get air born, so why not a race car?

They didn't show any vintage funny cars flying. This was a pretty big problem in the early 70s when bodies were pretty close to stock and aerodynamics was science for airplanes. These guys would fly 20-40 up in the air until there was enough force to tear the body off and the whole thing came crashing down.
