Building my 340 and have to make a choice. My machine shop guy is against hypereutectic. Input?
Completely depends on what you expect from it. For a stock-ish build hypers are fine, but if you want a 600hp 340, I think forged are in order. Watcha building?

Nothing crazy. Maybe 350hp max. Builder says he's seen his share of shattered hypreutectics.

Never seen a shattered hypreutectic in a modest 300ish HP build... must been abused? I havem in my BB FE which is prolly 350-40HP and have had no issues. probably fine IMHO.
I could always go with the forged with higher silicon content. Won't expand as much.

As long as you don't give it a 250 shot of laughing gas, hypreutectics should last forever in that application. IMO
I went with the speed pro forged flat top. Came with moly rings all for $405. Seemed like a good deal.
Gen 3 392 HEMI comes factory stock with hypereutectic pistons. 392s are rated at 485 HP.

Listen to your machinist. I've seen several shattered sets of these hyper junk pistons. They are made because they are cheap. I just replaced a set of these that were installed wrong. The tolerances are very critical and if you have heating or carb problems, it makes it worse. The pistons are the basis for your build. Go forged. They cost like $200 more? And people skimp all the time and brag " they work fine for me". Imagine Clint Eastwood with his .44 staring in your face," do you feel lucky, punk?"
I agree totally with your machinist , I will never use Hyper pistons in any build I touch , For a $200 more you have forged pistons that will not fail even if you want to increase the power later . Why cheap out , the gasket set to rebuild later is more then the cost of the upgrade !!

Your in my area, What machine shop are you using?
I would spend the extra $3 and go to forged pistons as well.
