I think you can pull them tight with a bolt but the special tool really works awesome and fast. It's a rivet gun basically, you thread it in and then grab the handle like a rivet gun and it expands the nutsert.

The tool is $20 at Harbor Freight.(US)  You can use a bolt, washer and nut too. Since your car is painted, the tool would be your best bet. Maybe a body shop would install them for a couple bucks?

If you want to use a bolt, make sure it's threaded the entire length. Use at least a grade 5. Put a nut on the bolt, then a thick washer that has a hole just big enough for the bolt to pass through. Lube the bolt with oil, and thread it into the nutsert. Put the nutsert into the door. Hold the bolt from spinning as you tighten down the nut. You'll "feel" when the nutsert is done compressing.

:iagree:  Glad you asked because a few people I'm sure have the same question.  It's a nutsert tool.

For one time use I would just use a bolt washer & nut ,
Thread the nut onto the bolt put the washer on next & thread the nutsert on , use a fender washer to protect the paint , fulling insrt the nutsert & lossen the nut pulling the bolt out & it will expand the insert

I searched "nutsert installation" on Youtube because all of mine are loose and am hoping this method will tighten them up.

I've done mine this way and it works well, especially if you have a tight space where the tool won't fit. Just be sure the bolt is fully inserted into nutsert and I use grease or anti seize on the threads

It's a good tool to have. There are lots of places to use Nutserts if you have the tool.
