Title: Challenger R/T SE Fender Tag Replacement / How Do I Code My Cars Options ?
Post by: 3.0CSL on March 19, 2020, 12:55:54 PM
Hi all. Fender tag is missing on my 70 R/T SE, no Broadcast sheet either, so I need the codes for the options that I can see are fitted to the car.
Door decal gives its build date as Feb 70.

Options I can see are
Air con - PAS - Power disc brakes - 383 Magnum - Auto gear box - FC-7 Plum Crazy paint - Black vinle roof
Tinted glass - all 4 power windows - stereo 8 track - 3 speaker dash - fender trims - bumper over riders - waist belt trims - Interior light group - Luggage rack -

Just my opinion but if the tag and sheet are missing I wouldn't get a tag made as you really have no proof that it would be correct. I know what you mean to have one to match the options. I would just take lots of pre-restoration photographs to keep with the car. Anyway, that's just my opinion.

Do you have a vendor that will reproduce your tag? If you haven't contacted anyone (legitimate), you may save yourself some time and energy. Within the last year, I was looking to purchase a very rare late model Mopar, however, the fender tag was missing, as was the broadcast sheet. Although the dash plate was present, as was all the unique items on the car, they would not create one for me. This was merely my experience. I'd make a call or two.

Without the BCS or knowledge of the original VON, you will not be able to reproduce an accurate reproduction fender tag.
AG Backeast will make any "fun" tag for you, but you'll have to tell them your intentions up front.

I had them make this tag for me...

You don't need one.....only 1 original fender tag unless you are trying to add to the value of the car then..... ::)

OK, I'll play...

I'm not here to judge your motives.  I assume that you are trying to reproduce your original fender tag as part of your restoration.  Fine.  As Alan said, the VON is the one that is the most difficult.
Also, the SPD will take some analysis, but you can figure it out.

Need to know a few things before we get started.  It's been 50 years since your car came off the assembly line.  Things get added, or changed.

1. need to know the VIN.
2. need to know the axle ratio.
3. need to know whether it was equipped with CA emissions.
4. need to know whether it is a column or floor shift.
5. need to know if it has a leather or vinyl seat...and what color.
6. need to know how many outside mirrors, and what color.
7. need to know if it has a 26 inch radiator core support.
What is PAS?

Check the left side inner fender apron near the screw that holds the air conditioning hose.  there will be two 1/8 inch holes for the fender tag.  Is there a 3rd 1/8 inch hole about 3-1/2 inches farther back?

I'll start with line 1.  That's the easy one.

Y 09...69-70 model year ...Built to specs for Export.
this would also add a "E" before your vehicle build number, this does not mean your car ever left the country, it means it was ordered outside the U.S. Mine was ordered by a U.S Serviceman and delivered stateside. The "E" would also be on the fender Data tag along with an "I" for International sales.
There should also be a light blue decal on the door hinge support if the car.

OK, we have something to start with...

I have attached a picture here of my 1970 Los Angeles built tag.  I put my tape measure in the pic for reference.  As you can see, my car has a screw (and corresponding hole) at the 1.5 inch mark, the 2-1/4 mark, and the 5-3.8 mark.  There is also a dimple at the 8-1/2 mark. (no hole)

Since I do not see a hole at the 8-1/2 mark on your inner apron...it is fair to conclude that yours is a "one-tag" car.  That makes things better.

Please note that your car is a VIN code B, built in Hamtramck.  Most of my research has been 1970 VIN code E, built in LA.  There are subtle differences.  What I can tell you is that the single digit "I" shown in the picture above is a 1971 artifact, and I've never seen one on a 1970.

I don't know what evidence exists for the "export" designation, and I don't know what body feature coincides with "export."

Yes the 1971 tag shown above would be different then your 1970 tag. Your VON number would likely still start with an E in line two, but there would not be the letter "I" on the tag. Your tag would also have the YO9 in the top row. :alan2cents:

We aren't too fussed if it isn't 100% right.

So how do we de code the options that are fitted to this car ??

We freed off the drivers side rear brake drum today. We turned the passengers rear wheel clockwise and the drivers wheel turns,  so this car has a sure grip rear end.

If you hold one side, can you turn the other. Do both wheels turn in the same direction.  :alan2cents:

You are still a LONG way from knowing what codes go on your tag...

You haven't answered all my first 7 questions...and I still have about 23 remaining.

Since we have determined that it is a one tag car, there is ONLY room for 6 + 6 + 5 + 6 = 23 possible codes above the bottom 2 baseline codes.

We don't have to fill them up..but we know the bounds.
We know it has AC, and power brakes.  and a console, and an antenna.
Sure Grip is not a code by itself.  But axle ratio with sure grip might indicate an Axle Package.

(remember to read them Left to Right, and from the bottom UP.)

xxx xxx xxx xxx xxx xxx
V1X  Axx xxx xxx xxx xxx
FE5 H6X9 000 219 nnnnnn

Will also likely have: Axx, B51, C16, J45, M21, M25, M31, M33, N41, N42,
You won't get N85, (tachometer) even though you have it...because it is a JS VIN.

More questions...
Is it painted red with black vinyl interior, black vinyl top, and black side stripe?
Does it have fender mounted turn signal lights?
Does it have all 4 molding groups M21, M25, M31, M33 (they often go together...)
Does it have hood pins?
Does it have the Music Master AM radio?
Luggage rack?
Still need all the questions I asked before.

Why do we think that this is an Export car?

There are some inconsistencies in your above post. The original poster already mentioned a lot of the options in his first post
Options I can see are
Air con - PAS - Power disc brakes - 383 Magnum - Auto gear box - FC-7 Plum Crazy paint - Black vinyl roof
Tinted glass - all 4 power windows - stereo 8 track - 3 speaker dash - fender trims - bumper over riders - waist belt trims - Interior light group - Luggage rack -

Note: a JS car would have N85 Tachometer on the tag in 1970
JS cars with a rally hood would not have fender top turn signals even with A01

It's a Plum Crazy R/T SE 383 Magnum.
SEs had leather ( in the centre of the seat panels ) seat facings ( or cloth ) this car has a black leather trim.
No idea of the axle ratio.
It was sold new to New Jersey.
It crossed the pond to Blighty in early 71.
R/Ts didn't have a column shift it has a floor shift.

Does the car have holes in the door edge for body side molding?

It will either be (about) less than 3, 3-1/4, or 3-1/2, or almost 4.

If it has a radio, PS and a remote-controled LH mirror, it probably has A04 Basic Radio Group...
Dual rear speakers (Does it have a hole for the fader next to the heater controls?), often seen with an AM FM stereo, would be R31

Need to be careful, as some codes would appear at some point in production cycle, and not at another... Only an expert like Dan or Barry could confirm if it has it's place or not according to SPB...
But it could be fun to get this tag together for fun, but it would need something on it to confirm it's a ''fantasy'' tag...

I forgot to say that it has a drivers chrome door mirror with remote. The passengers door has been changed many years ago, but it too has the same mirror. Not sure if it's a remote one, as the door card panel is missing.

These codes are so complicated 🙈

We are getting there...

Get to add the G33 for the LH chrome Mirror.
get to add A62 for the rallye dash
get to add A63 for the SE trim
noticed that it's a Hamtramck single tag...so its not END, but EN1
and if it's an SE, then it won't be black vinyl H6X9...but could be HRX9.

Standard or deluxe seat belts?
Do you have a 6 way adjustable driver's seat?
Do we have an axle ratio?
Do you know the color of the RT stripe?
Can you confirm body side molding, sill molding, and belt molding, lower valance molding?  You might still get M25 or M31

It has belt mouldings and the front valance moulding.

Il look re adjustable seats and de luxe seat belts tomorrow.

We had a quick look the other day, but couldn't see the tag on the diff for the ratio, will look again tomorrow.

No side stripe as it has  Challenger on the fenders.
                                      R/T

Not sure if it had a stripe on the rear end ( It would have done if I had bought it new !! ) will sand some paint off to see if any trace of a stripe.

No body side mouldings, will check if holes are there for a sill moulding.

Deluxe belts have different buckles, with stowage brackets in front of front seats and under rear seats...
Usually there is a Fasten Seat Belt light on the dash, but since the SE's have one on the roof console, it would be redundant.

I don't need the axle tag.  if the axle will turn, and if it has a sure grip...then rotate the axle 1 turn, and count the number of turns on the driveshaft yoke.

It will either be (about) less than 3, 3-1/4, or 3-1/2, or almost 4.  that's close enough to tell me.  I'm guessing it will be 3.5 turns of the driveshaft to 1 turn of the wheel.   If so, then you are 3.55 sure grip, or A36 performance axle package.
