After a 2 year hiatus (due to family issues for those that don't know) I finally made it out to the garage. The plan is to replace the terminal block on the firewall. After that install, the headlight relay kit from ROADMAN is going in. I even got a new crimping tool. :woohoo:
Nice, that is an important and fulfilling task.
That's great. Go get 'em.
Well worth the effort in making electrical system better.
Glad you are back in action!
:wrenching:
Very cool... Something I didn't even think of as I am rewiring the Cuda. May as well knock this out too.
Thanks for sharing.
:)
Get out there & git her done !!
Have fun too !!
Glad to hear you're back on it.
Nikki was complaining she needs a night on the town. :D
I bet Nikki is happy too!
Hey I made it back to the garage today.... :wrenching:
I started digging around and found my Redline paperwork..... 2013!! Wow!! What I thought was 3 years ago was 5. Thats when I found the burnt terminal!
I'm digging around under the dash.... not liking it! Seat is coming out!
I do have a set of "terminal " tools but an old SK screwdriver got the job done way easier
I labled all the wires as I pulled them, took a ton of pics too. Who knows how many days it will be before I'm back out there
I cleaned up the spacer block and got a real good look at the carnage.
Do these screws look correct??? Seams odd they would be threaded all the way up. :notsure:
I did a test run on the crimping tool I bought........... HATED IT! It does not roll the terminal enuff & terminal had to be pried out of the tool. Maybe I'm not working it correctly? What are you using?
The only really bad terminal is #18. Wire insulation did get a little hot but is 95% intact. would you splice in a fresh piece? Soldering up under the dash looks impossible, at least for my dexterity.
I have a few crimpers, I use a relatively small one for those. Sometimes it takes 3 or 4 steps to get them just right. I have spliced in a piece before but prefer to change the whole wire if possible. Do you have a clean block to replace that one?
New block waiting to go in :wrenching:
I recently bought a pair just like the ones you got.... They suck..... I bought them to replace a pair that look very similar that unfortunately took a walk....

Thanks for the confirmation... YES THEY DO SUCK!. Now I know it's not me  I'm a little stalled till I figure out a replacement. Anyone want to chime in on a better alterative??
I did some research on crimping tools recently and discovered you need one called an open barrel crimping tool. To make the factory looking crimps. There are new wire connectors out that are solderless but I have never used one. Hope that helps.

I think I'm going to try a little detail work on the ones I bought.... They look right but the metal cutouts are a little rough... I think a little work with a set of jewelers files & a little lubrication might get them to work...
That's an idea... kinda surprised no other opinions here
Got home tonite, broke out the jewelers files to clean up the new crimping tool a little. It did help with the terminal not getting as stuck in the tool, but still needed to be pried out.
That being said I see 2 issues. I watched a few youtube videos... seems like the good crimps I saw were made with a ratcheting style crimper. Even laying one handle on the workbench I can't get enuff pressue on it to get the crimp to "roll" properly. If I cant do it on the bench I'll never do it under the dash. I also wonder if the angle in the tool just isn't quite correct?
Or..... are the terminals I bought off ebay a little thicker gauge than they should be? I never even considered this but stopped by a buddy's shop today. The terminals he had looked more "brassy" as the ones I have look steel.
I've been testing w 12 ga wire/terminals. Something obvious here I'm just not seeing???? :notsure: :notsure: :notsure: :headbang:
Like I mentioned I had an old pair that "looked" like those that worked great.... But the replacements don't.... I've got probably a dozen pairs of crimpers, some ratcheting type, some very basic.... I have an old pair of Belden brand pliers that work great, they are basic pliers. unfortunately they only do larger wires, 8 ga is their smallest setting... I have a set of ratcheting Tyco brand crimpers that do the wire crimp & the insulation crimp at the same time & do both perfectly every time... But they are electronics grade & the biggest wire they do is 18 ga.... Plus they are over $300.... For the 10-16 ga range I currently have nothing that does a crimp I'm proud of....
As you mentioned the different terminals definitely crimp differently & the smaller ones can be much more difficult to get to wrap nicely.... Which is why I have the tyco crimpers, I use them for work related jobs that have to be right....
I wonder what
@Slotts (https://forum.e-bodies.org/mlist/slotts_104) uses?
Nice to see you back at it. Everyone has "life situations" at one time or another.
And as a reply for the crimper style. Yes the ratchet type is highly recommended. Unfortunately I don't have brand but it was purchased from an electronic supply store near me.
To those on the shelf on paying the pricey dollars for one. They are absolutely worth it when doing more than just a couple crimps.
Not OEM exacting crimps but are strong. The wratchet style also is very easy to crimp solidly without excessive hand strength. A bonus when doing a lot in succession.
Mike.
I agree that it's worth it to spend some $ and get a good set of crimpers. Fortunately, I have an excellent set that I use to crimp fishing line with on my Long Range Trips out of San Diego that work just fine. I figure if the the crimps will hold when a 200lb+ tuna is pulling on your line for 2 hours plus, they're just fine for crimping connections on my 'Cuda.
this is what I use. work well
https://shop.advanceautoparts.com/p/accel-300-professional-crimp-tool-170036/22904709-p?c3ch=PLA&c3nid=22904709-P&adtype=pla&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIjInd_tSG2wIVgbbACh0YgwxQEAQYBCABEgJJ3_D_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds
Thanks for the input guys. Yes I do have other crimpers but they wont work properly for Packard 56 style terminals. I took a good look at the ones from Advance Auto. To me it looks like the angles in the crimping dies are totally different than the ones I have now. So I thought WTH, ordered up a pair and got a 20% discount. Stay tuned, I should have an update by the weekend. :thankyou:
hmmmmm ya, what does Slotts use?? :notsure:
Ok now, according to UPS tracking the new crimpers should be here tomorrow! In the meantime I got a little sidetracked.
https://forum.e-bodies.org/general-topics/7/shaker-base-plate-and-holley-carburetor/6751/msg94855#msg94855
So today the ups man brought me something! Fits very nice - hits nothing (linkage/fuels lines'ect ) something else ol' BIGS needs to attend to :bigthumb:
These cars are never done!
Done ???
If it was "done" you would just get into building something else !!
Well said Neil, well said :wrenching:
The UPS man was just here! And he brought some goodies! I have all ready noticed the angles cut for the crimps are way different
So your wife will be watching a movie alone tonight? :haha:
Actually she will be.... gotta go take care of Johnny Romance... AKA pops. Afraid I wont get much goin saturday either, road trip to Oregon IL I never stops!
@blown motor (https://forum.e-bodies.org/mlist/blown-motor_52) feel free to stop by and get wrenchin' :woohoo:
Hey guys! Ok been raining and cold here last few days. It finally stopped and the sun came out this afternoon. My grass was growing 2 inches a day it seems so had to get cuttin' .... ya woohooo.... :Thud: But I did take a minute to test the new crimpers! BIG improvment!! :veryexcited: Take a look, not exactly factory, but close! Thank You
@JonH (https://forum.e-bodies.org/mlist/jonh_447) for the recommendation. Hoping to rock n roll on this by the weekend.
Very nice.
Made it back to the garage for a little assault om wire #18. There's no way I was going to use that burnt terminal. Warning : if you don't like acrobatics ti chi or yoga you may not enjoy doing this. I sure didn't. I cut the burnt terminal off and soldered on an extension. The extension wire I kept long so I could hang it from the brake pedal to help ease the pain (literally) of soldering. Then shrink wrapped to keep things tight. Then I cut it and prepped an end for the terminal. In retrospect this may NOT have been a good idea. It's hard to maneuver the crimp tool in confined spaces. I messed up the first crimp... :pullinghair: that was it... done for today. I'll start fresh on the weekend
:wrenching: I made it back to the garage today! I got a decent (not great) crimp on the #18 terminal. The black #18 wire now has a purple end on
it (sorry purists/numbers guys) this was the color I had in the garage at the time. Praying no mislabeled/crossed wires. Got everything back together, the only thing left to do is test. That's always the scary part! I have battery on the charger now. So tomorrow will be the official "testing" day. I took a crap ton of pics (way more than what I've posted) feel free to ask for them if your in need of doing this project and are not sure of color codes or something. If your really arthritic like I am TAKE YOUR TIME! It's not a race that's for sure. Better to go slow than to go twice
I also humbly ask that if you noticed something azz backwards please let me know :notsure:
BTW, a really helpful tool is the terminal lock tab reset tool. This is one of those tools you won't use often but a lifesaver doing a terminal replacement job. I have a limited number available to members only for only $4.95 w FREE SHIPPING !
:handshake: :haha:  :haha:  :haha:
Yes: I usually use my precision screw drivers for that. Good job by the looks of it.
So today was testing day. I throw the battery in I try lights, horn all good. I hit the key........................... pppppphhhhhhhttttttt! . I'm like geeeezzzz I was pretty careful and all WTH. Well, one terminal did not stay seated. I don't remember the number but you can see it in the pic. After a minor lock tab adjustment she fired up and all was good.
i just thought you might wanna hear .....

:woohoo: Congrats :clapping:
Got a bunch more done today! Got my overflow bottle out and working on the radiator. Think I'm going to spruce up that custom bracket I made. Had to break out a NEW creeper! Inside of the rad was not terrible...
top, good work, soon the takeoff !
Had a hard time on the right side trans line. I don't know who did the bend work but it's not quite right. I'm going to play with that one a little. While the rad is up at Glen Ray, going to install my B-DAY gift from the wife :bigthumb: This is the 128000 - 2 qt addition. Doubt I'll have any ground clearance issues. I'm thinking there should be a gasket for BOTH sides of the filter extension tho...... opinions?? :notsure:
Got her drained, din't make to much as mess!
Got the rad out ! Pulled it with pusher fan on it... was just easier.
Core support nice and solid. Maybe get a quick rattle can. I must say I've pulled waaaay worse looking rads. Tranny draining now!
Way to strip it down. By the looks of those pics. It was definitely time to refresh that rad.
Mike
Yup... it was "time" green death and all.
I got back out there and dropped the tranny pan :bricks: Not real happy 'bout what I saw. Granted I've seen waaaay worse at the shop. Granted it shifts just fine.
Historically the fluid looked real good when I bought her years ago. But the throttle linkage was waaaaay out of adjustment. If thats the cause .. :notsure: But this is the first pan drop ever. I've never worked my tranny very hard IMO. Some metal some band or clutch and signs its been hot. Better late than never to clean her cleaned out. But going further on that aspect of things is not in the timeline right now. Can't ignore it, but am going to file it for now. New pan and filter are on :notsure:  :fingerscrossed:
I'm no A/t expert by any means.
But is there some type of additive you can add that'll help prolong and reduce wear?
I'm thinking a can of Sea Foam can't hurt.
I wouldn't add anything to it. A lot of engineering has went into those fluids. I would change it in a year though. These cars need more maintenance than a daily just from the fact they sit a lot more than a daily does.
Sheldon , I do agree.. I won't bore you with the story but she hasn't done 500 miles in the last 2 years... :bricks:
Ha, ha: Oh, you'll take care of that when you get her going this year.
It's a bird..... It's a plane... It's a fire pit...... Nope! It's my radiator boxed up! Shipping out to Glen Ray today!

You wont be disappointed!!!!!!!
Talked to Bob at Glen Ray. He told me he does the recores in batches (basically). Starts with easier ones first. I'm first in line!!!!
While I'm waiting time for a fan upgrade!
Assembly was quick and easy!
ROSEVILLE had these parts to my shop in 2 days! :veryexcited:
For best pricing make sure you talk with DAVE.... :bricks:
I had it installed in a flash.... and I didn't move the belt!! :cooldance:
NIce !! that will help
Bob from Glen-Ray hust called! My fresh 3 core is on the way!!! :clapping: :clapping: :clapping: :wrenching:
Terrific news, it's going to look great in there.
Rad is here !!!! :wrenching:
That box is heavy ! I should have it in on Monday :bradsthumb:
I got the rad in the car last night! Remounted my overflow tank with the custom fabbed ::) mount bracket. The shroud will go back on today, then it's back to the HEMI , getting those oil leaks taken care of.
I will say Kudo's to GLEN-RAY !!!! :clapping: :worship:  Bob did a really nice job on the rad. He even sent new bolts and hose clamps.
No surprise, the rad looks better than new.
Bob at Glenray is great to deal with. I received my restored 956 rad last Friday. Looks brand new! :bigthumb:
Looks like they put in a high density core with higher fine count and more rows/inch.
Friend did this in his Hemi Dart clone with a 22" radiator, viscous clutch fan, and without shroud (didn't come from Hurst w/shroud). No cooling issues whatsoever. Local shop did it.

:bradsthumb: Yes went for the HD ... the cost differential in minimal!
Shroud is in, overflow replummed. Now just need to finnish up on some motor things before I give her a fill
Bob at Glen Ray is the best!!!! :ohyeah:

After futzing around for a couple hours with small vice grips trying (without success) to finish some new wiring harness terminals, I ordered one of these crimpers too. I have a box full of relays to assemble in the future, so I don't think I'm going to regret getting the right tool. When one of my sons inherits my toolbox, he will thank you for the referral, Bigs
You will like those crimps! :bradsthumb:
