Thought I'd post up a future project that my son and I found and bought; it's a 71 challenger with some really interesting features.
It's a survivor and is gold, with dark green interior (bench armrest seat) black vinyl top, black side stripes.
Also has rear defrost, hood pins, etc.
Was a 340 car but the engine is gone.
It's a survivor and will need some metal replacement but is very cool IMO; pretty excited to get it!
Very Cool , Congrats !
Thanks Chryco; it is a very interesting car.
Unfortunately the grille was busted out a long time ago and I'll have to try and find one; I know they are worth their weight in gold.
The grille will be difficult and they get harder to find as time goes on. There's 3 for sale now on Ebay ranging from $1200 to $2200. Shipping is expensive. Enjoy the project.
Terry
Worth there weight in gold! Pun intended? :haha: :congrats:
Very Cool-Can't wait to see more photos

Yes more photos would be nice.
Great color combo...nice to find them that way.
If you dont find a grill, pm me, I'm in Ontario

Doing some digging on the internet, and I'm finding very few 71's in this light gold colour so I'm starting to guess it was a rarely picked colour; especially with a dark green interior.
Can anyone confirm this is a rare colour, or am I out to lunch?
Medium rare I think. I remember quite a few in that colour back then, I think a lot of them got colour changed to purple or red. There was one in my town with louvers and wing, 340 car.
Found a chart online that suggests 4.9% of 71 challengers were GY8.
I know very few 71's were 340 cars, so out of those 4.9% could have been GY8, and then I have to guess very few of those GY8 340 cars would have had the split bench interior in dark green.
Of course these are guesses!
It certainly is a rare colour combo....I hope you restore it back to original. :)
Yup; she will be factory correct for sure; just need to track down a 340 for it.
I saw this forsale a few years ago for cheap at a restoration place, missed out on it by a hour. Congrats
Thanks Shooter[emoji106]
I was trying to get it for a father and son project as well. Did you get it from the original seller or someone else?
Someone else I believe
 What a great project. Pretty rare color, throw in a bench seat and green interior and there can't be many (if any) others. 8) very cool.
Thanks Superdave[emoji106]
Great project and cool color combination not seen very often. Good luck with the restoration.
Interesting that this car has gold carpets as well.
It is a very untouched survivor, which is a good thing.
I believe even the original radio is still in it.
:lookatthat: You don't see that to often! :perfect10:

A 340 71 non R/T in GY8 is a really cool find. I have a buddy building a GY8 72 rallye charger. They look awesome with a black top and stripes. Congrats on your find and I agree to keep her close to original as possible. It will stand out in the crowd!
Is it gold carpet or badly faded green ?
Definitely gold; the car arrived today and it is way cool!

Green was a very common color on exteriors, on vinyl tops and interiors. Late 60's and early 70's Dodge and Plymouth car lines. I remember. My wife's first car was a triple green 68 Dart. I have had a triple green 70 Barracuda and Challenger. My 68 RR was Green in and out. Chrysler must have got a great deal on Green paint back then. :tool:
Looking closer it may have been green carpet that ironically has faded to gold.
Luckily the car has its build sheet so I will have to decipher it and see what colour the carpets actually were when new.
Under the seat tracks or someplace that has never seen sun will tell the story...
the broadcast sheet won't show anything specific, but green interiors had green carpet - it's faded
FYI - for the 1971 Challenger (JH23), the bench seat was available in ONLY two colors: BLACK (H4X9) & GREEN (H4F7) - also it was NOT available in a R/T (JS23)
1971 Challenger (JH23) there were 18 colors + the late introduction FY1 = 19 total colors offered
for CHRYSLER CANADA LTD.: GY8 - "gold leaf metallic" was #12 of 19 in popularity on Challenger :canada:
That all makes it more appealing to keep her the way she was! It being a non R/T 340 gold car was plenty on its own! The bench seat column shift is not quite as sexy as the buckets were but practically never seeing it at the shows is plenty of motivation to keep it.
Pretty cool car there!

That's exactly how I feel about my bench seat AAR Cuda project.....absolutely the worst set-up to have, nobody wants one, but how many nice restored examples of bench seat AAR's do you recall seeing at the car shows ? Certainly something unique and different.
I hope you restore this Challenger with the bench seat :fingerscrossed:
You bet; this baby will go back to how she looked the day she rolled out of the factory.
My 19 year old son found the car; he's an E body fanatic! We will do it as a long term father/son project and eventually it will wind up with him.
We love the uniqueness for sure, and he could care less that it's a bench column car; in fact he appreciates that it is a very unique beast probably more than I did when he found it.
I guess the search begins for a 340 engine, and a front grille for it.
Even though it's a bit rough, everything else is there.
I mentioned earlier in the thread, you may have missed it,
that I have a nice 71 grill here in Ontario if you want to contact me.
PM sent
Great looking grill Terry :drooling: I think my current customer has an extra one stashed away as well. Would likely cost a fortune to ship out West. :crying:
I think this will be a great looking car once restored and it's nice to hear your young son is on board with the "stock" restoration idea :bigthumb:
You can deckscrew a wooden crate together pretty fast. I think it was around $100 to mail one across country to DODJ. A 70 grille is easier though if an end does get bent you can just bend it back.
Hopefully the two parties can work out a deal, those grills are getting harder to find.
I mailed a dash pad core from Ontario to Roseville Michigan (3 hours away) and it cost $161.00 CDN :dunno:
Was looking at the build sheet for this car, and the wheel code is 24.
I'm not familiar with that code; can one of you gurus educate me on what a 24 wheel code wheel was in 71?
Correction; the wheel code is W21; I guess it was an original rallye rim car
