Title: Extra holes on Steel Wheels
Post by: 303 Mopar on July 30, 2018, 12:28:19 PM
I'm looking for a set of steel wheels for the Charger and noticed some have 5 bolt holes and some have extra holes. Any idea what these are for and why?

Must be for some sort of center cap.

the extra holes are for the retainer for bolt on wire wheel covers - mid-'70s early '80s

The guy is claiming they are 15x7 and 15x8 which is what I am looking for, but stamped 15x7 and 15x6. He said all Mopar wheels are 1" wider than stamped.  Any truth to this?

No, there's no truth to that at all!!!

Rims are measured where the tire actually mounts. If you measure outside lip to outside lip you get 1" wider than what the rim width spec actually is, the outside lip is usually a 1/2" or so wide.

So, a 15x7 wheel will measure 8" wide outside to outside. That doesn't make it a 15x8 though.

That was my understanding too, thanks for confirming!

On older Mopar wheels there used to be extra holes that went over a small locating stud that stuck out of the drum to aid in getting those swine studs started when you had that flat at night, in the rain, with your good clothes on. I've seen guys smash them off to run Ford wheels on a Dodge. Ah, the fecklessness of youth, eh?  ::)

I think those centres started right around 1980 they have a concave shape near the edge where they are welded to the hoops. Mopar made 15X8 for Ramchargers and 4X4's in the mid 70's but they are heavy. Here's a set on my 76 4X4X440.
