Title: For Sale 70 RT U Code FJ5 Thoughts
Post by: Ebbs on February 28, 2018, 07:12:07 AM
E Body Forum

I recently came over from the other E bodies forums and have been looking for a "driver" quality 70 RT Challenger or Cuda for sometime.  My prior RT U code Go Mango project was too much work for me with work and family.

Wondering what your thoughts are on this 70 RT U code?  Looks like a nice driver quality car with some neat options.

Hopefully the pictures are attached

Thanks
Brad

Do you know what the previous history is on the car?  It looks like a fairly nice driver and it has some cool options on a great color, but you don't want to end up with a rust bucket that someone patched up with plastic.  What's the story on it?

And Welcome to the site @Ebbs (https://forum.e-bodies.org/mlist/ebbs_1412)   :welcome:

Just talked with owner who is a Chevy guy..he had owned the car for a couple of years now and is moving on to a 66 Vette build and needs funds.  Original engine comes with car and all body stampings are proper..
I asked for a few extra pics which I should get tonight

Did he say why the original engine was not used in the car?  Does it have a build sheet?

Certainly a cool car but more info is definitely needed . . . Welcome and good luck in your search!

Looks like a nice car. As long as its not a cut up hack job rust bucket and its valued right can't go wrong with that one. Build sheet/original equipment is nice but if its just going to be drove and enjoyed then thats only important to the guy who wants it to be.
:burnout:

Prior owner removed motor to be rebuilt...basically the top end of the current motor is original and the short block which is out needs rebuilding

No build sheet

Will get additional pictures of body tomorrow

Kind of a neat car but just in the photos a ton of stuff is missing that keep it from being a big dollar car. Body condition is a big deal so you really want to inspect in person for a good idea of condition. No one wants to wade in but the value could be anywhere from $25k-$35k is my guess.

Brad
It's hard to put a value on a car based on a few photos, not know the asking price and even harder to say if it's a good deal for you, not knowing what you're looking for.

I think a "U" code 70 Challenger in this condition with these options could be anywhere from $25K to $45K.....depending on the condition of the underside, how much rust repair and how it was done etc...etc...etc...

From what I'm seeing, I would hope the asking price, or selling price would be no more then $30K...

The big question, is this a car you would be happy with ? Do the modifications bother you or is that the direction you would want to go anyways ?

There's nicer cars out there, likely for more money and I'm sure there's cheaper cars too....It boild down to what you're looking for and what you want to spend.

Share the guys asking price and then we can tell you whether or not we think it's worth it. :alan2cents:

Welcome to the site.  Are you looking for a driver? Are you content with this one the way it is?  Paint jobs are not cheap so hopefully you can figure out whats underneath the paint.  Keep the pics and info coming.

Forum

Some additional pic's..
My main question now is the missing K-member skid plate?

The engine stamping is from the original engine which is not currently in the car. Also the original 26 inch radiator comes with the car.

My main idea with a car is to find a correct numbers driver car that I can enjoy..

Total originality of each part is not a big deal, just don't want a re-body or pieced together junk

Appreciate any advice

I wouldn't be scared to buy it either. You just have to personally check over the body and pay the right price for it. I still think somewhere between $25k and $35k.

Good choice I think. You should be able to get an even better one for that money. I understand the seller though, In this market it feels like they will keep going up forever so it's hard to pinpoint a value. There just isn't enough right with that one to justify more $$$ IMO.

I did a search on Cars - on - line for 1970 Challengers, then set the price range for $30K - $35K .....doesn't seem like a lot to choose from in that price range. :alan2cents:

How did he respond to the offer?  Was it like, NO WAY not even close.  Or was he like, well,... I need a bit more?  What do you think it takes to buy it?

He is asking $40k and said an overseas guy has offered full price...he said he would let go at $38k, but that seems a bit to high for this car

We will see, could be a sales tactic

Easy for me to say, but there will always be another one.  Try carsonline.com.  Try local craiglist sites.  They are out there.  He is probably trying to get his money back out of the car which is understandable.

how far apart are you, what's the asking price?
Title: Re: For Sale 70 RT U Code FJ5 Thoughts

About $5k apart

Any board members looking to sell... I'm in the market for a correct driver quality car... max budget I would say is $40k

I like the car. Yes it does have a couple issues, but most will unless it was just recently finished. It does have a few options that are sought after.
1) Air Conditioning-- This is an option many want and others don't. I would rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it
2) AM 8 Track, not many original cars came with this option, probably worth a grand+
3) Power Windows, you don't see this option very often and just a week or so ago, we seen a set go for almost $2500.

I bet the guy would take a little less than his 38k, but not much less. Maybe 35/36, might be a tough negotiation, but you never know until you try.

The car does look solid and you are doing the right thing by looking at it in person.

As far as having an overseas buyer may or may not be a tactic. Two years ago I was helping a potential buyer from the east coast on 71 GTX that was meticulous. Seller was asking 40k and was able to get him down to 38k. Buyer was uncertain and wanted to think about it, even after I assured him the seller had close to 50k into it. He wanted to sell asap to buy a different car and was willing to take a loss. Next morning I get a call from the buyer and the car was sold a few hours after I left. It was sold to a buyer from Japan.

You can pass on this one and may not see another one that peaks your interest for some time  or you could buy this one and then find several that appear better.

Good luck on your search for the right car.

Shouldn't that 70 440 HP 4-bbl K-member have a skid plate?

I thought E and B body 70 440 4bbl HP cars for the 6 quart oil pan. Also got "six pack" rods and thicker balancer??   :help:
Title: Re: For Sale 70 RT U Code FJ5 Thoughts
Post by: 6bblgt on March 05, 2018, 12:07:34 AM
yes, 1970 "U"-code 440HP 4bbl should have the skid plate on the K-frame and big pan, balancer & rods in the original engine

P31 (power windows) should also be on the fender tag
mistakes happen & things change over 45+ years, but there should be evidence to support the changes

So what's the opinion of this car's value that the original poster is talking about ?

His offer of $33K was turned down, is it worth the $38K the seller said he would take ?

That's still within the original poster's $40K budget  :dunno:

Is there comparable or better cars out there for $33K ?

While my budget is $40K for the right car...What I'm trying to figure out if this particular car is worth the $38K that it will take to buy it.  I have a follow-up call with the seller in a few hours. I guess we will see.

It has some nice options, but does it need anything to drive and stop the car safely?  If so, that would be my negotiation points.

Title: Re: For Sale 70 RT U Code FJ5 Thoughts

 I see this for $38,000 and then the '71 'Cuda on ebay for $25,000 (probably needing close to $10k in AMD metal not to mention paint) and this looks like a deal! But I guess if you do the work you KNOW what's under the paint. :dunno: I wish I had that decision to make, okay maybe not. Looks like a pretty tough market right now but there are probably deals out there. Diligence/patience pays off in the end.

I seen the A/C as a negative, not because it was there but because it isn't there. If the A/C was all there (or not optioned with it for that matter) and operable it would go a long way to making his asking price in reason. Nothing says pile of junk more than an A/C car without the A/C, it really makes you look to see what else is missing and on this car there are a lot of things missing. I compare this one to the Red U-code just purchased by a fellow on Moparts, similiar price but the Red car had a whole lot more going for it IMO.

Congrats on the purchase, I think the overseas deal was just a sales tactic. I sold one overseas and it's a minimum of 5k to get it shipped with always factors into the selling price.

When we rebuilt the engine in my car we didn't put the A/C back in because it wasn't working and I didn't want to pay to get it working. It doesn't make the rest of my car junk and nothing else is missing.

Heading down next week to pick the car up..
I think searching for Mopars is a bit addicting and it is about the chase or find in a lot of cases...we all probably "know" of cars that a guy won't sell or is sitting out back

I bought the car to drive and enjoy with my family..

If you're happy with it that's all that counts.   Nickel this and dime that and he thinks this and that one thinks that. Doesn't matter.   Took me getting stage 3 cancer to finally say fuck it and go get what I wanted. And will never regret it ... should have done it 10 years earlier.

Have fun with it and enjoy the shit out of it.

Living in FL I would never consider a car without AC.
Much better to have an AC car to start with, and it's a BB!
