Title: Challenger running for first time in 16 years
Post by: ledphoot on April 29, 2018, 04:52:57 PM
My buddy Craig and my brother Gene got the Challenger started today for the first time in 16 years.

By next weekend it will be rolling under its own power and I can put the Cuda on the lift and do the same with here.

That's cool. I really like seeing them run after being dormant. It sort of is just a bunch of parts when they don't run.

Yeah it was kind of sad. $800 and 28 hours of work is all it took to make her run.  Had the vast majority of everything on hand in my shop all this time.

The Cuda has been sitting MUCH LONGER with multiple starts and stops on the project. It's time to get them back on the road.

The challenger could be road worthy by then. The Cuda will probably be running but I am not sure if it will be road worthy in time for that. Depends how much progress I can make on the wiring etc.

If you need anything let me know... I'm ok with wiring...

Not sure but I'm thinking you use to post on Moparts as Sublime Chally?

Yup

Way way back. Been distracted with kids and Harley's for a while. Came full circle back to the cars recently.

Life keeps ya busy, kids are always worth your time & riding the bikes is always fun... long as the cars are hiding in the barn you can always come back.... Let them get away & coming back is a heck of allot harder..... Glad you hung on to them...

the cars don't seem to mind too much. They've been locked up in the shop all this time. The dust has piled on but some soap and water, love and attention and they're back on track.

I haven't been so excited about these cars in a while. When I heard that engine fire up it brought a tear to my eye. I can't wait to go cruising with my brother with these two e-bodies.

340, Ported W2's, 520 lift, TTI headers etc. ~400 horse. Pretty stout little small block my brother built.

ported W2s = you should be closer to 500 hp

Great to hear it come to life again, eh?! There IS something special to the moment it actually fires and runs, that's for sure, and with a snotty 340 like you describe, it'll be even more fun getting it on the road!  :fingerscrossed:

Mild pump gas build. Conservative estimate on power but I doubt very much it's more than 450 :) closer to 400.

And yes it was an emotional experience to hear it fire for the first time. It's been a long time coming.

It'll be interesting to drive the 416 stroker powered Cuda after a spin in the 340 Challenger. Both Trenec 5 speeds, the  Cuda has 3.23 diff and Challenger has 3.55.

Ha: Stock 71 340's go around 315HP. Headers and camshaft would probably make 370HP. I agree you are cooking more than 400HP, It's the MPH at the end of the quarter that counts of course. W2's sure make a big difference. My son is installing a ported W-2 360 in his little 240Z, I expect it to surprise him with it's performance.

Smallblock mopars with good cam / head / gear combos have surprised many a big block.

In a 240z???? His jaw is gonna drop.

The carb isn't gonna work out, I guess when I pulled it I left fuel in it and it caused pitting inside that won't clean up. It runs OK but the secondaries are getting fuel past the seals... May do a Holley Sniper or something like that.

She sounds pretty stout for now, should give my 416 a run for it's money.

Love it!!!  Car sounds nasty and I mean that in a good way.  I wish I lived closer as I would like a ride.  Good luck getting back on the road as it sounds like you are close.

We're both in California, perhaps some day we will end up at the same show / cruise hanging out.. My brother's Challenger should be road worthy very soon. My Cuda is gonna be a bit longer. Maybe six months left since nothing I want to do to it is cheap or easy.

 8) I just watched that video and my daughter came over to watch (8 years old) and she said "it sounds like a lot of people are clapping!" We are sugar, we are. :clapping:

Awesome! I'm doing the same thing, trying to get mine back on the road. Will definitely be doing a video when I start it up for the first time.

Nice one superdave.  My seven year old stands behind my car and begs me to floor it as its loud and he loves it.  Not sure if thats dangerous, but I love to hook him up.  Maybe I should get him some sort of face shield?

This car makes me feel like a little kid again. There's just something about a healthy sounding V8 muscle car that makes a big guy smile ;)

That's great news. I too have gotten my Challenger running and next year on the road again . Sure wish mine looked better,  mine was dormant since 2000 , I almost feel like it's a negeleted child of mine( don't worry I don't have kids) I'm 50yo and trying to figure out why I'm not as happy as I was 20yrs ago then it hit me oh ya my Challenger was why. It sat outside for 18yrs out of site and mind way too long. And rusted off some weight ,

Anyway
, congratulations on your progress .  2019 will be the year for the Mopars to rule our roads again.
